Sometimes big obits slip by unnoticed. I had the honor of working for my favorite childhood newspaper because Oakland Tribune sports editor, Bob Valli decided to "take a chance on me." He hired me to cover high school football for a season. He said he was impressed that I was the only one who took the job test who realized a high school basketball quarter was only 8 minutes long.
