I as the caregiver could not choose the comfort measures for him. He had to choose to give permission for me to care for him. He had to choose to accept the measures given. He had to choose to let these measures comfort him. So, although I had skills that could have eased his discomfort, I had to learn I was not a failure because of his belief in suffering.
