- Go to Kerry Is Out of Touch With the Working Classes
Sorry, but no.
1. Free market economy doesn't work purely when too much wealth or control of a certain sector falls entirely into the hands of a few...such as refining oil, or inventing Windows, or selling cocaine. Also, private industry would never have built the intestate highway system and the states have done a collectively poor job of maintaining it.
2. The hydrogen in a tank of water in your car would probably not drive it a hundred feet on the level unless you detonated it under the empty car. It has to be compressed and refrigerated to be stored in meaningful amounts. We absolutely must get off the petroleum jag, however, and hydrogen is no worse and in some ways safer than gasoline. In the early seventies everyone was going to power their VW's on gobar gas (methane) from anaerobic decomposition of sewage and garbage.
3. The japanese cars last longer, drive better and have sappy names. Ours are PLANNED to last six to seven years (ever wonder about the six year auto loan? Wonder no more), but have some interesting, and sometimes sappy, names. Which would you prefer?

Maj, not so sound superior but this is America!
The big difference between socialism and capitalism is incentive. Incentive will always lead to innovation, especially when it comes to problem-solving. And if a nation depends on the govt to solve their problems, the people won't engage in it so the problem grows and the dependence increases.
One day soon, through innovation, we will be running our cars on water. The hydrogen and oxygen will be separated in an engine, the H burned creating the energy needed to run the car.
And you know what else? There won't even be any pollution from it. It sounds to good to be true but it is a reality already.
So gas prices aren't a real concern for me, govt taking my money to problem solve is a concern for me.

Thanks for taking the time to write a thoughtful and personal piece
I think Kerry's issue comes out of his world-view ideology. He hates the wealthy and figures they drive the SUV's so they'll end up paying more in the end.
Forget the fact that he'd be the third wealthies president in U.S. history.
It also, as you said undermines the working class. 50cent/ gallon is 25% to 33% more money to pay on something almost all of us, even if we take the bus, use every day.
Every day Americans can't afford their purchases to go up such a hgh percent!

Any idea what gas costs in Britain, Canada, Australia, France?
We enjoy artificially depressed prices already, paid for through our military budget, foreign aid, private "fees" to royal families, etc.
Buy a dependable car with low mileage and high miles per gallon and a warranty. Probably won't be an American company, but it might still be made in Tennessee or wherever. Then just make the payments and keep up on the oil changes and scheduled maintenance. You might be paying forever, but, take it from a guy who used to ride 'em 'til they dropped, a dependable gas efficient car is worth it, costing you less per month in amortized garage fees, fuel costs, and worry medicine bills! It could save your life.
Bush may not announce a gas tax, but where is the money going to come from to fix your roads? And I don't know about you, but in three years my gas has preeety well stabillized...at about thirty cents more per gallon than when GW was elected. So that means I'm paying more per gallon, PLUS more taxes for gas attached at those increased prices. Either way we will pay more and more, it's just that Bush doesn't admit it.
