mark2556, thank you for chiming in with that. I found this interesting
tidbit on google: If you can’t remember the rule, remind yourself that, just as you wouldn’t write “alittle” you shouldn’t write “alot.”

Hannah,

She won't. I believe Quirky had plans until later on, so if she doesn't answer back for awhile, then, don't go to pondering people. Shadow

<red faced>  Heh, heh...Think I might make that mistake myself, alot...I mean a lot, *A* lot... Help, Quirky, please don't cross me off the kindred spirit list!

There's a VERY big ofence that happens all the time:

"Alot"...As in, "I use my Monster Dong personal vibrator alot."

"Alot" is not a freaking word, people!!! Please check the dictionary; it's not there. However, "A" is a word, "lot" is a word, and "a lot" are.....uh....two words.

Whenever I see it I want to see how well my spear gun works above water.

Don't get me started

I deal with this on a daily basis.  I have to review ad copy that advertisers write and the misuse of commas and apostrophes is atrocious.  Not to mention the myriad of other extremely dumb mistakes.

Hooray!

You're a stickler, I can see.  Hooray!  Your/you're is one of my pet peeves, too.  (Can we talk about its/it's now?  Or the misplacement of quotation marks, something that grocery stores seem to have a particularly hard time with?)  Have you read _Eats, Shoots and Leaves_?  I haven't finished it yet, but I love it.

Quirky, You're on to something here. I have misued words like that and
others usually working too fast. Most time it can be caught proofing, but spell check won't catch it.

mark2556, will you please teach me to right gooder?

posted by Julia. on July 1, 2004 at 6:12 PM | link to this | reply

I agree that for many, and esp. for established writers
like yourself, it could well be just being in a hurry (although for some reason that error is not one I make no matter how harried I am). But for others, I think, they may not actually think about it, or know the difference. The real question is, why does it bug me so much when other common errors don't??

posted by Julia. on July 1, 2004 at 6:11 PM | link to this | reply

Y'all talk funny. You'se need to learn gooder righting.

posted by mark2556 on July 1, 2004 at 6:09 PM | link to this | reply

I think it's called writing in a hurry. When I proofread my blogs I catch
that error a lot.  It's not like I don't know how to use those words, it's simply sloppiness and being in a hurry.
