JustACarpenter,
That's very nice--did you write it?

I don't know that song. Vaguely remember the movie.

Life is what it is…the question is…would you do it again?

If salt should loose it’s season,
Wherefore would be the spice.
Would life even have a reason,
If one could not tell what is nice?

Perhaps we have allowed both past and future to weigh us down.  there is only here, there is only now, there is only THE BLOG!  tg

groucho,
Living in the present is probably one of the most difficult things for humans to do.

when you realize that there is only the present, then it becomes easier to embrace those moments.  So hard to do, yes -- i have been fortunate to have many such moments  in my life -- even as i have often chosen to dwell on the painful ones.  tg

shadow,
I can get there, if only in my mind.

katray,
you are right on all counts. Bliss does exist, but only in fragments...bits and pieces mixed in with the mundane and the sad and the bad. Happiness, however, seems more realistic and attainable.

Quirk,

Nirvana is only a step away if you believe enough. Only problem is that the next step usually takes you past and then you have to start over. But, its fullfilling while it lasts, that's for sure. You'll see that good life someday its there for the taking. shadow

Excellent post and comments Quirky
We humans are so contradictory eh? Always seemingly searching for total bliss, but I don't believe it exists. Not on this plane. If we really thought we discovered it, how long could it last? Before we got BORED!, lol. Which is probably a good thing, for what would we have to create art with, if no angst, sorrow or conflict existed?

Beachbelle,
a combination of stablity, excitement and success sounds like a pretty good recipe for happiness all right.

Ody,
so if I have the photographs of those brief snippets of nirvana, I can relive the moment??

posted by Julia. on August 7, 2004 at 2:08 PM | link to this | reply

Nirvana is always around the next bend
which is why chasing it will drive us around the bend.I aim for stability in some aspects of life, excitement for some and successes along the way. With that combination one is generally happy more than one isn't.

Take lots of photographs
when the ever-changing reality periodically matches your dreams, cause it won't last forever!

To my wife, I'm S.A.M. (silly ass man), to my best friend, I'm the last Paladin. I think I'm just little old me.

Talion,
Who are you, really?? So often I just can't believe the incredible things you write. That second paragraph--now THAT is nirvana...what a gift you have.

Ariala,
I think that's true...humans have happiness "leaks" that necessitate refills now and again...

Striving for a perfect life is a truly noble endeavor, but in reality, I fear it's an unattainable goal. In order to have a perfect life, we and all that share our lives, would have to be perfect. That ain't happening. There's no such think as perfection. All we can hope for is "as good as it can be." Achieving that is still far easier than you may think.

What is life? It's not tomorrow. That's the future. It's not yesterday. That's history/the past. Life is right here, right now, this very moment. Our journey isn't a flight in a plane, a super-sonic jaunt over the expanse. We're crawling, one slow inch at a time. While being wise enough to learn from our past and smart enough to plan for our future, we shouldn't ignore the present. We should do what we can to make a second, a minute, an hour, a day as good as it can be. If we can accomplish this, the rest will take care of itself.

I'll try to remember that!

Quirky, I often find my "Nirvana" in special moments, tranquil
settings, a hike, in meditation, but I always need to be refilled and reexperience Nirvana all over again.  Seems like I can't live on yesterday's "fill" -- everything in this life requires refills.  Nice post!

Personally, I don't want Nirvana.
Remember what happened to Kurt Cobain.  Even a crappy day is better than none!
