Spitfire,
it can be very liberating to get rid of the clutter, but another thing entirely when everything is gone except what you are wearing. I imagine none can really know how they would feel unless they were put in that situation.

Great post, Quirks.
For me, the answer would be "too much". I'm seriously caught up in my lifestyle, and it "runs" me now, not vice versa as it should be. I'd lose my identity, at least in my own mind, without it!

I think it would really suck to lose all my stuff,
but, it may be doing me a favor. I've been trying to "declutter" my house and I've gained the strength to just toss out the boxes that I have no idea what's been in them for many years...thinking I obviously haven't missed whatever they contain, so screw it! The contents are obviously nothing I'm missing. I have donated so many bags of clothes and "stuff" to charity lately casue I had to buckle down and realize I don't NEED them anymore. If I were only left with the clothes on my back after a disaster (funny, that day may come in a few hours due to Hurricane Charley!!) but as long as I have my husband and my dogs, nothing else really matters.

Quirky - the only possessins I have that define me are my kid's drawings
and schoolwork I've saved for 20-some-odd years, the items I've inherited from my grandmother and godparents, and my photos.
I would feel lost without those.
My furniture, clothes, etc., - Nah.

Having Truly Nothing? Imagine Being God
Go on, it's allowed. If you were just a conciousness in the void, you'd get very bored. And lonely.
After a while, you'd probably do something about it.

in the academic world
we speak of the commodity self, that identit that gets developed in relation to what you buy. High school kids have a great understanding of this! you know that you speak thru your clothes there! Tyler durden (the pitt chacter in Fight Club) tells us to forget that -- you are not what you buy.
As long as my family were safe and we had the chance to rebuild, I would feel like i knew who i was without my stuff. But I'd sure miss my Stones records.

Many great posts, Quirks!
Am I defined by my stuff? Nah, I'd miss my collections if I were to lose them, but they certainly don't define who I am.

Quirk,
Well if it wasn't for the computer, you could say that's about all I have now, the clothes on my back. Yes, I miss my stuff because it was sentimental things of my family and my animals. It tells my story, yet I don't really need it to define who I really am. At least not anymore since I don't have it with me. shadow
