yes exactly, re: human frailties. I agree with you but think there are "levels" and humor does do this but perhaps at not quite so deep a level.

BTW, I love Dave Barry. At one point, I aspired to be the "female Dave Barry" type of writer.

Serious vs. humorous

The most difficult writing for me occurs whenever I try to write humorously about a serious topic.  But I hear what you're saying.  You have to be willing to expose your human frailties, because that's what best links us to one another.  A good writer can do this, even when they're writing humor.  Dave Barry and the late Erma Bombeck have exhibited that talent.  I earnestly hope to develop it one day.

Maybe that's why I like writing poetry...
you can get the feeling out in images without really telling the tale...
