It's Your Walk . . . Not Your Talk!

Hey there, Sistah, I'm almost with ya!  (Wow, there's a statement!!!) I believe with you that the best preaching a Christian can do is by living his or her life in a way pleasing to God.

We can say that they are wrong and not follow them or approve of them. But at the same time our goal isn't to proclaim morality, to defend ourselves or to judge others.

I also whole heartedly believe that we are not to judge others, because that job belongs completely to God. I do, however, somewhat disagree with you, in that I think we do need to encourage a moral life style, i.e. proclaim morality.  Nor do I feel a need to be even somewhat tolerant of a lifestyle that is so much opposed to God's Word. God calls us to be holy as He is holy.  We can never completely be like God, because we are human, but that should not keep us from whole heartedly attempting to be like the perfect example -- Christ -- and to do our gut level best to live a moral lifestyle.  Regarding the silver coiffed TV evangelists who preach morality and hatred of sin (and gays and prostitutes) on TV but have their drugs and prostitutes off the set -- I believe they will be held accountable to God for the extreme disassociation between actions and their words, and for leading so many people astray.

God calls us to be holy, and to be followers of Christ.  Christ was sinless and perfect, AND He went out of his way to reach out to sinners.  So even though I disagree with the normalization of the gay lifestyle and the legalization of gay marriage, YOU BET I'll do my absolute best as a Registered Nurse to provide the best possible care for a gay man dying of AIDS.  Do I agree with and support that lifestyle?  No way.  Can I love that person?  You bet!  Because I too am a sinner, so far from perfection, so much in need of a Savior.

As Christians, we have to overcome centuries of bad press caused by centuries of bad behavior from Christians. Although churches can have effective ministries and attract, what works for both the short and the long term is a genuine love for people.  I agree!

Your line, "Whether reeling from the effects of a self defeating lifestyle or simply empty of the important things...", really struck a chord with me. The kind of Christianity you describe is much more palatable to me than much of the fundamental, evangelical preaching (almost hate speech) that has been thrown my way at times.
