but the country is so factionalized that I doubt it matters what stance Karzai takes or should have taken. Anything he does which opposes any number of warlords gains him creedence in other warlord camps. If the Taliban hadn't ruled with an iron fist and religious asceticism, both which the Afghan warlords respect to some degree, Afghanistan would have been in a state of perpertual civil war since the Russians were driven out. And without the U.N. troops there, the country may still end up in civil war.
