DamonLeigh, You are right. An easier commute is Phillipines to S. Asia
and Mexico to America.  But these two issues remain unsettled.  Phillipines is in the midst of a nursing shortage which they are dealing with.  Also, even if entire families are allowed to immigrate, there will still be grandma and etc. to send money to.

This Feels...
...a bit simplistic to me.

Sure, we have Philipino nurses (to take one example) working in the UK - legally and illegally. And sure, they send money home to their families. But this simple scenario neglects two major factors.

1. These ladies are half a world away from their families. Sometimes they leave behind children in the care of relatives, husbands working the fields, aging parents and so on. What sort of emotional toll do you suppose such massive separation causes?

2. We get nurses and the families get money. But these nurses were invariably trained in their home countries, at the expense of those countries, that are often the poorer nations. So the poor nations invest in training of their people, and then they lose them all to the West, and consequently never have enough nurses to staff their own hospitals. Does this make sense to you?

Passionflower, Thanks for reading and commenting! Of course there is a
question of legalizing, amnesty or worker program that would clean up the borders.  We might have to vote on it in the next election.  It would be nice to be able to focus on drug traffickers, at the border with Mexico, rather than innocent Mexican laborors.  What do you think about that?

I don't think it matters how we feel about it. Immigration has always been around and will always be here with us.
