Wow! That sounds pretty cool - and a little scary. Has it happened any more?

I think that would be an interesting experience. It reminds me a bit of the movie Flatliners, where a bunch of med students stop their hearts and then start them up again so they can have that out-of-body, near-death experience. The closest I've come to anything like that is spending a couple of hours in a deprivation tank.

Yea, I've read about that. I'm still a little more comfortable with the contemplative pray approach.

That happened to me
I was laying on my be. And all of a sudden I could not move anything. Even my mouth could not move. I felt like screaming. But I could not even open my mouth. Another time. I saw myself on  the bed. I was over my body. First then I floated into space somewhere. I must of died then as well. I came back or someone elses is using my body.

They do it
for out-of-body experiences, or so T. Lobsang Rampa writes.

Sannhetseeker, I think you are on the right track...

Yogis and others who punish the body are attempting to detach conscious Self from physical Self.

One of the easiest ways to do that, of course, is to hold your breath for 20 minutes...

You're right. Nor are all experiences one has as one gets closer to "God".

Thomas Merton once told his class that it is not good to dwell on your death, but that seeing the world with you no longer in it was a good subject for contemplation.  Of course, not all reported near death experiences are good ones.
