- Go to Raising The Retirement Age To What?
aptly put, empty_handed_painter.
I believe the lowering of morale to be the toughest thing to handle.

it is a slap in the face, redlunar,
considering that three positions he held in the last thirty years paid in excess of $12 per hour.

retirement age
lifespan
basically the increased lifespan is due to medical advances, many fewer infant deaths, and many people born at the first part of the 20th Century living into their 80's and 90's.
i see more people born later dying sooner.
and the average lifespan might decrease in the near future as generations progress.
but yeah -- social security alone doesn't help much. wasn't meant to. smart people have extra savings or income.
raising the retirement age can only hurt -- lowers morale. people get tired of working all their lives and enjoying fewer years of retirement.
of course, when some people die before retirement age, then that helps the system itself -- not the individual

saul,
I'm glad that your father has made it through the system and is able to survive. But, it seems like such a slap in the face to him that he is only receiving $700 per/month even though he worked all his life. Something needs to be done to S.S. but what that something is, I don't know.

redlunar,
my father has worked and paid taxes since he was fourteen years old. He is retired now and receives barely over $700 a month. Thank the powers that be his home is paid for and his only expenditures are utilities and a few drug prescriptions (besides food, of course).

saul,
I agree with Darkkethoughts, it is impossible to live on S.S. alone. I think that "retirement" age is a bogus number. Most people are retiring when they want to, if they have the money. The others just continue working if they don't.

An excellent point, DarkeThoughts,
rendering all this conjecture moot.

95% of people can't afford to live on social security and end up working until they die anyway...which makes the "retirement age" seem a little irrelevant.
