And you are correct. Many cultures use mutilation of various sorts to show acts of fealty, loyalty, and atonement. Some Indian tribes had customs of cutting their hair to show grief. And then there is the current fad of "cutting" amongst our younger generation, which shows a loyalty to rank stupidity. Hey, but each culture to its own, yes?

I've made an error, I posted "Japanese," I meant South Koreans. There are many Oriental traditions in where by mutilation of the body is a sign of loyalty or atonement to an ideal. Once again, great post.

Things I would sacrifice a digit for..........
There are things in this world that I would cut off many things for but land and symbols are not in the list. I realize that the Japanese are a very honor bound country and probably see things differently. Also, I mention land as things not worth sacrificing but if it were the land that was my home, as they feel it is, I would sacrifice much more. Great post, and very funny closing line.
