Very interesting idea, Thomas.
I have my own theories, which, if you've ever spent any time with early-teenage girls (as an adult), you'd probably consider. I also think some of the witch trials were possibly prompted by the desire to control property. Apparently, many of the women tried were landowners, and it was one way to wrest their land from them.
One person who fascinates me in the Salem stories is Giles Corey. He was "pressed to death." Check it out on the internet, and you'll find the story of a very brave old man. He hung on through an inhuman death so his family would not lose their property.

I was watching a television show which started that the salem witch trials might have been brought on by a bacteria/fungus in the rye. The rye might have been creating visions which brought about their conduct? Because this was some odd freaky behavior.

Thank you for reading.
I enjoyed browsing your blogs and like your Voltaire quote in the "About Me" section. It's one of my favorites, too.
I checked our local library system listings and found many, but here are a few:
Prometheus Books, 1996
Tom Doherty Associates, 1987
New American Library, 1980
Washington Square Books, 1972
Hope you enjoy it. While researching publishers, I encountered a book by Hawthorne titled, Pearl, so I'm going to read that soon. Thanks for pointing me there!
