This is a great recollection and deserves preservation, preferably including at the sites you once played at.
In California we had the Gold Rush of 1849. Perhaps I will post on it in my OWN blog?

The bings are still there, kingmi. It is estimated that there are still 100,000 Kt of spent shale in West Lothian. Some bings now have grass growing on them and appear quite natural. Others were used for landfill and foundations for Motorways. Also they make bricks with one particular bing - that should keep that brick company going for a few thousnnd years.

JMcN, What was the process used to clean up the bings? Or are they still visible? I lived in KY and used to see the remnants of strip mining. They got better at restoring the top of the earth at least, when the media began covering it.

What a fascinating blog and thanx for posting it. Especially happy if I made ya think of it old hoss. We just used to play in the back alleys of Montréal amidst the garbage pails and alley cats. We used to take the cats......never mind.lol
