How about a Messerschmitt?, JU 88, or Heinkel 219 night fighters to name a couple , then there were the Me 262's jets that came too late to do any good.

Only comment I can make is that the Spitfire was the most famous British single engine fighter old chap. Not a Nazi fighter.
