We are an enormous congregation of cohesive dissimilarities in this country.  I, too, have wondered the same thing quite often.  I have come to the conclusion that limited rebellions may actually occur sporadicly, but a major political breakdown is unlikely.  Even with the advent of the religious right and their growing political clout, it is still difficult to imagine a schism within this country like that of the American Civil War, or, for that matter, like Eritreia in Ethiopia (akin to Texas declaring itself sovereign again).  Still, with the right (and wrong)mixtures of social events, anything is possible, even in the good ole USA.  (Just look at all those nutcase militia groups out there.  Get them all united and there could be some serious fighting within our borders.)

Amazingly enough, You-look-fabulous, I have.
But an extended war fought with domestic armies wasn't what I had in mind.  However, point taken.

it's a big country out there

and a lot of ideas going around, some of them not quite in line with the mainstream way of thinking.

but there's the terrorism going on every day in every city that tells us that this country is not as united as leaders want to paint as the picture.

there are divisions and there are a lot of people not wholeheartedly behind our government no matter who runs it.

you can say the same of it as you can 9/11 -- it could happen again.

i always wonder how close we are to a civil breakdown from any number of sectors.
