Well, I guess I'm a whimp writer, I stay away from debates, and I especially keep away from any writing that needs to be nasty to survive.

What if the angry person is right?
Not impossible.
HUMOR can be better than making people see gentle reason, and can be more vicious than your basic invective.

It reminds me of the tale of the sun and the wind where they made a bet to see who would get the guy to take his jacket off and the sun won through gentle coaxing.

Yep. Just so. I try not to be nasty, unless provoked so far that it's the only way to get someone to back off and leave me alone. By that point, I figure it's a lost cause. Motorcycle Diaries was a great film, precisely for the points that you mention. Eventually I will dig up the memoirs about that trip and read them. My watercolour instructor from last year recommended the film, came in one day just raving about it.

Most people who read up on both sides of a debate take a more cautious line. Great points!

I like that line 'exist only in their minds'. I could use that as an idea in fiction.

So true May
Writing fueled by undisguised rage is devoid of meaning, 99 percent of the time. It can be an easy trap to fall into, especially when sharing your political or religious views. Strong emotions can overtake the pen, but all you will have is a piece that doesn't work, doesn't inform or enlighten.
