Readywriter55,
Your first comment that Donald Rumsfeld is a "good man" is foolish! It destroys your credibility as a thinking human being. I have no idea what it will take to get these people jailed for "crimes against humanity"! But I guess as long as Arabs and Muslim Leaders support the enslavement of their own citizens Bush Inc. will have a place to go! They don't really need bases here in America! Or do they?

If only you'd close a few over here and go home.

Zenresistance, I understand all that you are saying, but again, when we are at war not only in Iraq, but against terror around the world, it just doesn't make much sense.

Mysticgmkeeper, No it doesn't, and let us pray that it doesn't bring great harm to us all

priorities
Maybe they're closing the bases because they a) need to reduce expenditures in some areas to boost others, b) (linked to "a") need to consolidate resources, and/or c) have prioritized that a lot of social and other domestic programs that probably should be cut back or eliminated are more politically important than the stateside military budget.

What's going on is the short-term pinch of the tax cuts. Should the cuts survive, there will likely be a recovery coming up pretty soon to start filling up the coffers some more. This happened in the 80s with a lot of other stuff, after Reagan's tax cuts went into effect. The same thing happened in the early 60s, after Kennedy's tax cuts went into effect. The major stimulus from tax cuts is forwarded by a tight wallet right at first. It's a law of economics, not just a political stance.

Scoop, I understand where you are coming from, but many misjudgments have been made in the Iraq war, and have cost us dearly, and I just not ready to trust the judgment of those in charge with the war still on!

The major fact that you have to llok at is the type of war

we are fighting today compared to WWII, Vietanm, and even Desert Storm. No one likes to see closings or job loses but they have to be revamped to suit the needs of what is needed. When bases close the locals have an oppurtunity to change the area like they did at Pease Air Force Base and be very successful but others like Plattsburgh Air base are still struggling.

The military has to fight wars with technology today, of course the gun toting grunt will always be their but look at how the drone aircraft has changed things and navy battles are a thing of the past.
