Mysticgmekeepr, I have to find a different discipline here and that is not to spend time and post too much here when I have other writing which needs to be done

...one thing this experience does is force one to be a more disciplined writer doesn't it? I never have been and now here I am trying to keep up 2 blogs.....and keep the creative flood gates open and flowing and then capture and direct the flow.eeeee gads!

Mysticgmekeepr, yes I started because I just wanted to write--still do even when bomnbarded with other writing work

I guess some do, competition is natural and not necessarily to be avoided. I just don't think it was any of our intention when we set up our accounts....the original intent no doubt being "purer" :-) I deliberately eliminated "Blogger" from my subject matter after I heard that. I had only used it once I think anyway and it was before i knew it was a "hook" word. I think the people who have the top blogs have them because they put alot of themselves in them and attempt to extract something from the reader at the same time...and they write things people want to read. I personally read 1,2,3, &4 because I enjoy them...you guys write well and interesting, keep typing away.

MysticGmekeeper, some people have a need or desire to be number one/three etc and some resent those who are in those positions. When I saw how easy it was simply by mentioning the word blogger my head was turned for a moment but then I remembered why I am here. So yes, I believe some people care about that stuff

...do you think anyone really signed up for this experience with some idea of being a number one blogger, or thinking about "ratings"at all? I would suspect that most of us came here to write, to read others...to be heard, and to listen and to grow from other peoples input, and from sharing our own. I doubt that ranking entered into it until we were here, and saw our name with a number after it. Numbers are like everything else in life...they change, people are extraodinarily loyal at times, but oh so fickle too....lets just write, and let who will come

JohnMcNab, I am taking that at face value. Thank you sir

Scoop, yeah maybe I should write a book on Blogit strategy. Imagine if everyone did this stuff all at once

MayB, oh yes the time tested
"blogging" experiment, did the teacher give extra points for this? Good post, it is like the lottery, "you can't win if you don't play"

I have never read your articles because of the blogging word.  I read your articles because they are written professionally and with sincerity.  Do I get extra brownie points for that, MayB?

Majroj, that's good. Now I will need to stick with it but I want to

Elan27, most people are upfront about their strategies. I suppose I am saying that it is a temptation to use the "blog" strategy to stay near the top but it would be a far more interesting challenge to do well without that. On the other hand, it depends how we define doing well here. The main part of that is to write and be read. The best thing is when people engage with the writing. Nothing is better

Jemmie211, it just feels too much of the same to use every time and yet readers seem to go for it

L.E.Gant, when I drop the word "blogger" I won't be up there

Ca88andra, people already have written 1001 posts on blogging, perhaps more

lol MayB...
It's true - you market your blog just like any other writing. But it's very generous of you to clear the way for more ambitious bloggers...lol.

I read you anyway...I don't worry about yout title
sorry but it's true...I like what is inside of the blog...you know?.....but you are right though, as the word "blogger" does move the ranks along....take care

This post made me think that someone could emulate Scheherazade (?spelling) and write the 1001 posts on blogging... now that should lift some rankings! lol

Distinguish between "most popular" in the last 24 hours, and "top blog" You're down in one, but stillup there in the other!

Exactly why I rarely mention the word "blog"
I'd rather people read my writing because they like it and not because I use some cheap gimmick.

I like your honesty....  .... yet the fact is that I dont read ur blogs or neone's for that metter, becoz of the subject line.. I read people, for wat they write..underneath!!!!

Hmm...MayB...
....I just click on yours cos they are written by you...I don't pay too much attention to the titles...I really only do that when I'm looking to read someone new. Or maybe I missed the point you were making? It is late..I am drugged..so I may have! ;-)

Ms N Dependence, Talion, it would be great to see what happened if the monster died but it is a protected species

Zentropa, precisely so. It is the same as magazines with certain faces on them. It's why they still find stories about Diana years after her death

There is no way you can raise my ranking. If you can go around the world on a high ranking... I can not get out of sight. Just write a headline that says you are leaving. That works too.

I did a column about this as well

When I first joined.  It's fascinating to me, as an outsider, that people are climbing all over themselves to see if "x" poster has mentioned them in the most read for the month.  That's an easy column for the day, and I can't do it.  Maybe that's what we get for being writers.  I know what will work.  I'm still not going to do it. I used "blog" in the title of the one on this phenomenon.  Other than that, I haven't.  I have a 13-16 rating after just 3 weeks. I have no idea what that popularity thing is all about.  I write because I see something screwy, and I'd be inundating my best friend with emails.  It's therapy for me, and relief for  him.

I've added the other blogs----on one family so I can brag on the kids, and one on writing because I think I can help some people who want to learn or those in the thick of it like us who want to swap ideas.  MayB, I think we have a lot to talk about.  So, ratings aside, I know I've gained a lot.

posted by terpgirl30 on May 15, 2005 at 8:44 PM | link to this | reply

You know that little things like that are going to make a big difference to your ratings. It's just like when a current affairs show did a story on Nielsen boxes. Their ratings for that evening were far in excess of what one would normally expect. All the people who had Nielsen boxes tuned in to watch that story, which artificially inflated the show's ratings. It wasn't long before several other current affairs shows followed suit, with accompanying spectacular ratings. But soon the novelty wore off and the fiasco was over.

"We" are - but if we stop feeding the monster - it will die. Great post MayB!

Are we really so vain that we click on anything with "blogger" in the headline hoping (or fearing) it's about us? Don't bother, I already know the answer. A peek at the Most Popular says it all.
