You're right, kingmi. Teachers do not have enough voice in disciplinary
matters, subs have virtually none whatsoever. And I like your rules. A lot of this zero tolerance nitpicking has been detrimental to the school system. I don't particularly want little Johnny Cantreadalick or little miss Janey Cantspellherlastname to come to school with a Bowie knife or icepick (or sharp pair of scissors, actually), but sending them home on a mandatory suspension for bringing scissors or fingernail clippers to school is pathetic, uncalled for, and terribly incongruous to the infraction committed.
I have often told people who ask me why I don't sub anymore that, well, honestly, a substitute teacher is the least respected position on the planet and the students treat you accordingly. Given the propensity toward violence exhibited by many of our students today, concealed weapons permits, self-defense training, and hazard pay all seem to be in order.

Saul & Two, as another former sub, they better never make me administrator
1. chewing gum mandatory
2. students work the three r's all day every day
3. teachers say-so when a student is to be suspended
4. 80% of all suspensions to the in-school suspension rooms, staffed by strong professionals
5. all violent offenders to home immediately.

You're right, twodog. And they probably will. I also was a sub --
for three years. It's a barely concealed war zone.

Saul, How Politically Incorrect Can You Be?
It's a sign of the times, my man. Drop on back to high school, check out the disprespect, out right billigerance in the classroom by a segment of the student population and you will probably find the root cause for the problems law enforcement officer have day after day. It goes back even further, in middle school, and elementary school as well. I was a sub for five years, threatened countless times, the air let out of my tires at least once a year, a kid tried to supper glue my hand to a classroom door knob, and assualted twice, just for trying to maintain order in a high school classroom. Yep, it's a sign of the times. I'm surprised the defense didn't use the race card, or course there is always the appeal to play that hand.
