If you think the minimum wage is too low, don't accept that job. I believe that minimum wage in the US is $5.15 and hour. Lower in some tipped professions like waiter/waitress or bartender jobs. No one is holding a gun to your head and saying that you have to work the job that pays only minimum wage.

I like that you have a big heart, but we can only do so much to save the world. Insisting on the minimum wage is almost as bad as a hand out. If you can focus your attention on helping the people with no skills gain better opportunities, then you've done something great!

its odd that foreign manufacturers are opening auto assembly plants over here

and do you really think that peasants in Bangladesh or Indonesia are better educated than people over here?

you think maybe we outh to get rid of wages altogether and the big corporations have slave labor?
and you think skilled labor is sewing jeans all day long?
so in order to compete, U.S. labor must accept lower wages, is that what you're saying?
interesting your background -- your ideas don't seem to match.

Minimum wage was never meant to be a living wage and anyone, with a little experience, who can't get a better job that does pay a living wage, might want to consider going back to school and learning how to read. Jobs aren't being sent overseass, skills are. What is a company like Microsoft supposed to do when they can't find anyone educated enough to handle the jobs they have available? What is an auto manufacturer suppposed to do when prospective employees need pictures to marginally understand how to work on todays computerized assembly lines?

...that has more or less happened - the MW in both the US and here is derisory.

And yet it hasn't worked. As EHP points out, jobs get exported to ever-lower-wage regimes. It's known as a race to the bottom, and we're getting there fast. it leads to poor working conditions, poor people, child labour, deaths and injuries in dangerous factories, and general depravation for all.

All, except, for the western consumers who are seeing the price of all goods plummet, in real terms (check out the shelves at Wal-Mart) and the western shareholders of Nike, Adidas, Dior and so forth who are making a nice buck on the broken backs of South Asians.

Many of whom are Muslim, by the way. Any connection to terrorism? You betcha!

This will garner much and heavy disagreement . . . .
but I think we should completely do away with all minimum wage laws, at all levels of government. Let the market drive prices, including wages. The higher paying employers will get the better employees, and once an employee gets some experience under their belt at lower paying companies, they will move on to upper paying companies. Those that pay low wages will be damned to be nothing more than training grounds for entry-level workers, and they will also be limited to customers who are searching for price at the expense of quality.
