In a letter to his son, Lord Acton wrote " All power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." How true this is!
Our rulers now exert over us powers that a mediaeval prince, or a Persian satrap, could only have dreamt of ; for whereas they enslaved only men's bodies, our rulers enslave our minds. Or they delegate this duty to extra-governmental bodies, such as the organs of the race-relations industry, and its bastard offspring, the political correctness Gestapo.
In my recent research for a series of articles on the Spanis Inquisition, I was struck forcibly by the disturbing similarities between 15th century Spain and our era. Being 'politically incorrect', or deviating from current political orthodxy is today's heresy, and althoug one is no longer burnt at the stake, the punishment for it can be draconian in the extreme.
Sad to say, I see much of this bigotry and invincible belief in the rightness of one's own views here in Blogit, where in some quaters dissent from posted opinions incurs not reasoned counter-argument, but unreasoning venom, and puerile taunts.
Still, you and I, and others of like mind, must do our utmost to bring a breath of rationality among these modern Inquistors!

. I have found in my 10 months here that posts that deal with serious subjects or subleties do not do well. You and I may be the oldest members. I too am 74. Age is a factor; intuitively, I sense the average must be around 25-30. Education and intelligence are others.

i worked on a senator in louisiana. he was the biggest asshole i have ever dealt with. there's something about giving someone power and position that makes them think that they are above everyone else, and that laws do not apply to them, too. that particular night, he was having chest pain and i was all too ready to slam him with morphine just to shut him up.

ariel70 -- certainly there are those who support freedom of speach only as
far as if you are saying something they agree with. There are certainly those who would try to re-manufacture the facts to fit into prefabricated alcoves of limited reason but there are some who are just blogging. Concocting what is seemingly outlandish and convoluted reasoning just to garner reaction and with it the accompanying attention. Ya gotta watch out for them bloggers.
