What was meant here is that arguing points is an ego thing. Actually doing things (the works - helping others, helping one's neighborhood, etc.) is how one learns about and gets closer to "God".

Good works
are certainly important... but I would add that I think the motivation behind the good work matters, too. Is it evidence of faith? to be admired and looked up to by others? to be obedient to what God wants us to do (the do part of the "do's and the don't's)? to put the other in a position where they owe us something?
