Don't give out your address and/or go home with strangers!

Best if the 2 families can meet one another first, and run a background check just in case!  Yikes!

I dont' know what the moral of the story is ... I don't want to say that it's "don't trust anyone" because, how can we live if we're scared all the time and not willing to take risks?  Also, you didn't realize until later that your business card had your home address on it ... I would have done the same thing and then later realized that it wasn't safe.  Maybe the moral is, don't completely quit trusting, but totally modify your business cards to have a PO box!

the moral of the story...

is that you played with fire and that you should have been more cautious...i have been corresponding with a death row inmate in Arizona who had been charged with triple murder and who always claimed his innocence...i have even written a controversial article about him...the family of the victims posted on my place and said that i was brainless and that i could end up as his next victim...

i have been corresponding with him for about 2 years or more...he was always nice and polite, but in january 2005, he started writing me love poems and love letters asking me to come to the USA and to live with him...i have stopped the whole correspondance...this man scared me away and if he ever gets liberated, i will fear for myself, even if an ocean separates us...

You ought to be cautious with ppl...don't play with your own life...

I totally agree, perhaps I should qualify my second comment; the 'you' I use is collective, not aimed at anyone specific.

I spose its just possible that the guy was in shock from what he had done, or had no memory of it.

and I want to add to my last sentence, because in reading it back it's not what I meant to say at all...I only meant that so many people judge others as worthless because of the things they do...I don't do that no matter WHAT someone has done.

For me, yes the time frame would make a difference, as would the circumstances. As I said to Avant, he was very outwardly calm which I am certain wasn't what he felt after killing someone the day before. Would I date a convicted murderer if he served time and was eventually released? I'm not sure...it would depend upon a lot of things...but I wouldn't automatically judge him to be a worthless human being.

exactly, perhaps he didnt kill people he lunched with ! Life is much more complicated than fiction.

thanks for reading. I was most amazed by how calm he had seemed, though inside he must have been going a little bit crazy, worried and a whole mixture of emotions.

posted by Julia. on August 19, 2005 at 2:00 PM | link to this | reply

I'm curious...
would it have been different if he'd murdered someone say, 10 years ago, had served some time and THEN came out and asked you to go for a coffee and you found out afterwards (not from him) that he had killed someone? Please dont think I'm picking holes, I'm just wondering by the reactions of most of the other commentators on this, if the timescale is significant or not.

posted by Silva-the-Wessex-Wench on August 19, 2005 at 1:59 PM | link to this | reply

The moral is -- I think that it was luck and circumstance that he didn't pursue. Perhaps he didn't kill people he lunched with. I danced once at a nightclub (ie a while ago) with someone who a few weeks later was locked up for being a serial rapist. He did not attack people he knew. He was the friend of a friend

Quirky-girl

moral of that story? God was watching over you:-) My husband and I met a few "strangers" like that, always together. I don't think we ever met a murderer but a few odd ones to be sure. An old lady with a tattooted head and body piercings everywhere taht we had over for dinner. One was a Professor at the University of San Diego who was a writter, and put together a disk of my poems and pictures and we went to see it...oh my GOd he was an old drunk who chased me around the house fell in  my lap on the couch , knocked over the slide machine....it was a nightmare of sorts but hysterical at the same time, we went running down the steps like Cinderella at midnight with a half naked little hairy ape of a man chasing after us.

Moral is you can't judge a book by its cover and be very very careful, trust your instincts and your angels and pray alot!.

Hello Quirkyalone....
"We are what we are in the dark."  That is a saying I use all the time to monitor my own behavior. Even with little things.  No one will know if I make the extra effort to pick up the paper someone else dropped or put the toilet paper on the spindle when someone else just didn't bother, thus it might hit the floor and get contaminated.  It is difficult to know what someone is really like, what they are in the dark. With the BIG and little things in life.   I guess, we just can't be too careful.  It is important to really get to know someone first, before we decide to really trust them. Quirkyalone, your post is great.  It only makes us realize that we must be selective with who we interact with and we need to be diligent in protecting ourselves.
