Thank you for your comment, and your interest.
That book probably was " For Whom the Bell Tolls".
I think I'll post an article in a few minutes that I had published last year, about Spain today, and how they seem to be reconciled to their brutal past.
There is a passing reference to the main male character in the " The Lovers" part 2 that I've just posted.

Enjoyed the photo and would like to see more. Likewise with the historical background, which gave me an urge to read a bit of Hemingway. Can't remember which novel - For Whom the Bell Tolls, probably - but there is one of the most shocking scenes I've ever read which details the massacre of some villagers in rural Spain.
A very interesting post, Ariel.

Thank you for your comment.
I didn't mean a physical, but rather a psychic poisoning of the land. I wouldn't want to live there either, although I must say that friends live there, and they seem content

Ariel--
While I don't know whether it would "poison the soil" it's not too difficult to imagine that something remains...I sure as heck would not want to live in a house built there.
This was beautifully written and descriptive.

Yes, it is strange, isn't it?
I shall do a short post soon on some of the other peculiar Spanish place names, some of them quite poetic

Nice post. I agree that some land should be held sacred.
But the translation on that name is pretty funny. Peeled chicken?

Beautiful photo...
and a very interesting backstory.
I doubt I'll ever be anywhere near that part of the world. I don't travel much (other than to St Petersburg and Moscow every now and again) ... I'd rather just live in this area (NY/Philly) year round.
I wish I could drink like a lady,
I can take one or two at the most.
Three and I'm under the table.
Four and I'm under the host.
