Quirks... that's fine by me! lol... but you'd better not trick me with
another headline.  I hate when people do that.

Re: "If I said that I don't enjoy when people post about their pets or how it bored me, would that inadvertently put down anyone who's ever written a post about their animals?" No, absolutely not, it would simply be your opinion you were expressing. If people take offense to your opinion, that would be their issue, not yours.

Anyway, let's please just stop discussing the issue and agree to disagree about this.

Quirks...

If I said that I don't enjoy when people post about their pets or how it bored me, would that inadvertently put down anyone who's ever written a post about their animals?  or just be my opinion?  (I don't really feel that way, just making a point).  I'm sure there were people out there that thought you were talking about them... you know how it is...

Does it really matter?  I defend creative headlines just as much for YOU as anyone else.  I've read many of your headlines and thought that the subject was going to be something other than the content of the post.  Not once did it bother me.  You've always kept me entertained with your posts.... well at least so far!

I'll bet that kinda made you feel foolish didn't it? Not such a good feeling...

blackcat--
please if you will, read the post again. I never put anyone down. I simply stated my opinion, that I do not care for fake "I'm leaving Blogit" headlines and won't read them. I'm entitled to feel how I feel, as are you. Why is it so important for YOU to defend the practice--or keep trying to convince me I am wrong?

Quirky
I hate those too!  I even once bought it so hook, line, and sinker that I emailed the person who was supposedly so "upset" and asked them to stay with Blogit, only to find out it was all a ruse for ratings!  UGH!  I learned my lesson that day!

Quirks... it has nothing to do with being fooled.

I've read MANY headlines that I thought were about one thing, but were really about another.  It's just creativity at work.  Where do you draw the line?  Do your headlines always read as a statement of exactly what's to follow?  Of course not!  The fact is... the headline is what draws you in.  You're obviously a very competitive person.  I believe this is why it bothers you so much?  But how far can we go?  Should we ban all shocking words from headlines?

As for why it doesn't bother me.... I guess perhaps because I don't really care about the game?  I like being in the game, but I don't resent others for playing it.  If I really didn't like the way someone wrote, then I wouldn't click on them, fake headline or not.  Half the time I'm really curious what they wrote to come up with the headline.  I find it all very entertaining.  And when I see a really good or fun headline I think, nice job!   I guess that's just my personality?

I really honestly don't see what the big fuss is about.  How exactly is it hurting you or anyone else?  Don't you think it would be better to focus on ourselves instead of always putting other people down?

Ms. quirks.....I agree w/ you, but usually click anyway....
I don't like them, but it is common around blogit to read these. But I like your honesty and toughness!

Dave--
oh right you are--that's why I said, if I miss a brilliant post because it had a fake goodbye headline, I can live with that. One has to draw the line somewhere, and for each person it is different.

blackcat--

Why do people hate them? Come on, you can't be asking that question in all seriousness. Do YOU like to be fooled? Does it feel good to have a moment of panic when a beloved blogger plays with your heart by making you think they might be checking out of here? Beyond that, many people hate it because it's done strictly for ranking, and it's dirty pool.

As Blackcat says, it's 'kind of common'. A reader can generally work out whether the 'should I stay or go' feeling is genuine and if it is, as with Offbeat recently, the fans will state their case of persuasion. For Offbeat, it was that first-time BBS that was getting to her and we could empathise because we've all felt it.

But also, a reader can pretty much always work out when the Fake Goodbye is being foisted upon them for exploitation. It's laughable to many, but it must grate on the loyal fans too. If the post is about something else, then a one-time trick to fool-then-delight is perhaps forgiveable. When the formula is trotted out for the umpteenth time, I defy anyone to deny at least a tad of annoyance, no matter how brilliant the post might be when you get there.

My feeling is that in the long-run, the trick doesn't work. But for a short-term gain, it will be used and used again. Not clicking is your only way to truly voice your disapproval.

Good post QuirkyQueen.

i really hate this bye bye trick...
bloggers who use it are fake and big attention whores lol

Quirks...

Honestly, I think the "should I stay or go" post is kind of common because everyone gets overwhelmed.  I never feel it's a trick for them to feel that way maybe because I know I've gone through it myself.  And if you read it as goodbye when the post was about something else... well, as long as the post is still good, then what difference does it make?  Why do you take it so personally?

I guess I'll never understand why people get so upset by headlines.  Is it about competition?  I guess I'm just more easy going than some of you....

everyone gets one transgression...I did it once too, a long time ago--but boy the guilt I felt sure wasn't worth any clicks I got.

Guilty Quirky!
I did it once when I was going on a trip...i figured once in two years wasn't too bad. I'm going away tomorrow too..I promise I won't post a goodbye title though!! Forgive me for my one transgression? ;)

Right. Those who leave without a word are equally puzzling.

I hear ya Quirky and I agree for the most part.
I thought about leaving about a month ago, but decided just to take a break from Blogitville. I felt better after realizing it was just Blogit Burnout Syndrome (hey, that's one for the Dictionary!) Anyway, I do get pretty sick of the constant fake goodbyes, too. It's right up there with all the rest of the misleading titles that have nadda to do with the post.
