Quirky, if blogging is a waste of time, there are sure an awful lot of us wasting an awful lot of time.   Blogging of one kind or another is everywhere.    It can't be more of a wasted time than sitting in front of the TV with only one finger being exercised on the remote.   At least blogging we exercise all of our fingers (except maybe for one thumb)

Yeah, so says the king....
No, seriously, I only use blogit to post my fiction and to keep me motivated to write it.  I was honestly STUNNED when I discovered we had shit like "rankings" and "popularity" but pretty much to this day just ignore it and write.  I will say, however, that once comments started coming in I've had fun communicating with others.  Some of you guys and gals are just plain swell as a 30's ganster might say. --Darj

THERE ARE TIMES

for me when blogging has been theraputic

there are times when it has been a waste of time...

In the middle stands recreation, so I keep doing it.

There is much truth to what you're written,

but you cut right into the meat of the matter when you wrote:

Blogging is what you make of it—nothing more and nothing less.

JJ--
I wasn't actually referring to you or anything you wrote or said. I believe the term "game" (as it was intended by myself anyway)--was about the whole ranking "game".

All excellent points in benefits. But, you have to admit that blogging also at times becomes a game of skill at keeping your mind alert. Shadow

Quirky,

I hope you weren't quoting me when you said that a blogger referred fo blogging as a game.  Not that you would have been inaccurate, because I probably would have said that.  The only inaccuracy would be in your use of your definition of the word game to interpret my statement wherein I intended my definition.  In short, play by the rules of the game when you decide upon the definition of the word ''game.''

If it was a quote of something I may have said I can only say there is, as I can see from both your post and the comments, a complete misunderstanding of the definition that I have of a ''game.''  I do not see the definition of game in the limited sense that is being used here.  I will continue to refer to blogging as a game, but when I do I will not be defining the term game as it is being defined here; perhaps I'll avoid use of the term altogether.

I'm not saying that you have referenced something that I said, but I think it is important for everyone to realize that the definition of ''game'' goes well beyond what seems to be in use here.
So there...   jj  (  I still liked the post.)

Couldn't agree more...
Yes, you're 100% right.  I'm a "developing" writer, and now that I've been blogging it for a VERY short while, it's really helped.  Interacting with people, getting good feedback, reading other writings...all of it helps me.  (Besides, where else can I get "together" with SO many people who have SO many differing points of view?  Such a fun place to visit.)

Enjoyed the comments...
I agree it is not a game.  Yet the Journalistic community considers, if I may phrase it, "a game" and has not  acknowledged its value for what it is ... and what it can be.  It can be whatever you want it to be.  If you want to use it for fun and "games"...go ahead. That doesn't change the reality on blogging.

I think that blogit has several advantages...

-it helps most of us to perfect our writing skills...(to me it is not a hobby, i do pursue a professional goal)

- even if it is little money, we get paid

- we meet some interesting ppl that we might never have met in real life because of the distance for instance...

so here are the benefits as far asi am concerned, just to name a few...

I am extremely pleased I discovered blogging. Now I have a motivator that tells me I must follow through. For me at least, blogging is not a waste of time. I think if you allow it to become an addiction, like the pitiful old women who smoke and play video poker all day, and you end up "blogging", not necessarily creating, to the exclusion of all else, that's the time to break free and get a real life. Otherwise, write on! Hemlocker

I think that sometimes we tell ourselves it's a hobby or a game so we won't allow ourselves to get to caught up in it. It's an addiction too, and sometimes it's hard to see the outside world for all the attraction that blogging holds.
