The French have claimed two or three times to have an AIDS vaccine too.

well maj, so far it is heading for 1918 again. France, a small nation, has

over 12 million vaccinations of a medication which MIGHT HELP in a bird flu epidemic arrival. Everyone agrees that the medicine (vaccine) must evolve each year, taking into account viral changes, etc. BUT, America only has 2 million of these vaccinations ready for a population of ??? I heard it on the news last night.....

It shall be the final revenge of the French, to outlive us because of better concern for her citizens. They will love that.

Doctors called to work for FEMA or volunteering cannot bring own supplies

or equipment. They found themselves with little or nothing to work with sometimes.

This is a case where a stressor event shows where the system breaks down...bureaucracy throttles response. It slowed and still impedes the war against AIDS, and hopefully it will not let us be decimated bgy avian flu the way we were in 1918.

maj, maybe it was good that you didn't go to New Orleans or the Astrodome,
as a fully qualified fellow from here in Tucson went, with a doctor from here and they weren't allowed to give shots, set up drips or much of anything. Our doc bought her own medicines to avoid Red Cross restrictions and admininstered things that way, on her own dime. They both returned disillusioned with the whole crossing state lines stuff, unlicensed bull, etc. Made 'em crazy. They won't do the same again, the same way again, they said.

I was avoiding mentioning Chinese and West Europeans.

points well made, maj. but, even the Indians are beginnning to play our

society like a slot machine, no? Finally? Some individuals make it without a single bit of help, but it's usually strong resentment which fuels them, I think. Some do have to stay buried deep within their own society to make it big, unbeknownst to the general public. We are big enough to allow people to make it or fail in many diverse ways.

Skin color, facial features, strict religious codes and some isolationist cultural traits may slow down the process, but they don't necessarily keep success away. Some people learn big Capitalist things and then go home to their country of origin and rake in the dough there, maintaining homes and offices in both places. Think Hindu and Chinese, right now......

Like MayB says.

It's OK but only if there is opportunity.

The Irish, Poles, Italians, Irish, Scots, Japanese, Chinese, Acadians, Catholics, etc. have all had their turn in the barrel. Most have had many members climb out. Those who look more different tend to have had a longer climb. Those who could not adopt and adapt didn't...until now.

Now, if you have enough members and figure how to play the society like a pinball game.

I don't hear the same comments made about the folks to move here and sweep in the money without supporting any community but their own.

Who was it who said that adversity brings out the best in people? only if it cmes with a set of guarantees and multiple choice. Very strong descriptive post.

THAT'S VERY INTERESTING BENZ...

that's a new angle for me.. all I can say  is self importance and pride is a very ugly thing....

It causes people not to take minimum wage jobs at 16 years old gettting thier first job experiences.  This in turn has them stuck in these very same jobs at 37 years old wondering how no one ever gave them a hand up and why they were never afforded the opportunities as everyone else.

Everyone has to start somewhere.  It's a shame peope are too busy looking for a luxury liner when god is sending them a row boat and a chance to change thier circumstances.
