I followed your solicitation and read this. You write very well. I agree that guilt is a useless emotion. I was raised Catholic and got a lot of it. I'm now guilt free.
As for your post here, it's true. Most of the poor black folks I know are not taking responsibility for where they're at. It's sad. They also do not support each other in getting out of it. The phrase 'He thinks he's white' comes to mind and I've heard it many times.
Yet there are those that have taken advantage of social programs that are aimed at providing them a helping hand to get out of that situation. The question I think we should be pondering here is this. Do we want our tax dollars going as giveaways to the corporations and the rich thereby increasing the disparity between rich and poor, or should we provide programs, (NOT, cash giveaways because we all agree that is not the way to get people to depend on themselves), education, welfare for work, etc. that will give those that want it a boost? As Jesse Jackson says, "It costs less to send people to Yale, than it does to keep them in jail."
