Yes, 2 bucks a pop is a rip-off. The time spent to get the 80 bucks could have been made at a fast food joint in one-third the time it took to make write the 40 articles. Who has time for THAT!!

MiaElla, perhaps you are meant to be the accidental writer. You can tell a story. I enjoyed your truck story -- I was in the truck and worried we'd have an accident

Tapsel-T, I know I don't have answers and am seeking them myself but we should share ideas. There are plenty to go around

Aria4, yes it is a case of one step at a time and sometimes our feet feel heavy

its hard to know sometimes what step to take next and what is the right step for where you are at with your writing at the moment.

MayB-great advise to the authors. Success comes in steps. I guess we all will reach there. T-Rex 1

MayB, There surely are a lot of angles to consider in this writing game.   You have a good handle on it all.  I appreciate you sharing with us.

DaveCryer, the opportunity cost is a biggy. I dare say you apply that concept when deciding how much teaching to do as opposed to workshops. In this regard the dismal science was not so bad

It worries me to see people use all their energy writing for peanuts. I write for choc-coated peanuts and I'm always exhausted.

JohnMcNab, can you afford not to focus on the money but the writing?

posted by Azur on October 6, 2005 at 10:42 AM | link to this | reply

I like to apply that 'opportunity cost' theory to all aspects of life, even down to really silly time-saving things like making sure that if you're going upstairs and there's something that needs taking upstairs, you take it, saving the time required to come back down for it. Any time saved goes into writing at the end of the line. The end of the production line is always Writing.

Up until yesterday, MayB, I had no need to make money from writing, but circumstances seem to be changing.  Thanks for all your excellent advice.

How pleasing is it to know that you will continue reading my posts? Today I am going to finish the Homo affair. It is also refreshing reading your comments.

Littlemspickles, yes I choose to write here for next to nothing too ;-) but it does worry me when I see people killing themselves for so little

lol - I'm lucky blogging is just a hobby....
That $2.00 a pop is far more than what blogging brings in!

A nice read MayB - it keeps the integrity for the writing profession.

Thanks for posting this. It's so great to get advice from someone who has experience. I'm a bit clueless about where to start so I appreciate any advice I can get!

MayB...I appreciate all the advise you put out there for people who are
willing to take it.  My work is geared toward the Children's Market right now.  I've been submitting several pieces of fiction to some of the less known magazines hoping to break in to print and start a portfolio.  It's tough.  Anyways, your advise helps inspire me to A.)  try new things and B.) keep at it!  Thanks!
