Pretty quickly, MayB.  Thoughts, ideas, leave me fast and once they are gone, I can't seem to get them back.

Masky, if only you could see my desk? Actually it's better you don't

BlancheDubois, I think it's the adrenalin. I've decided to write my next two pieces the same way

Mayb,
Wow, good save.  That must have got your blood going.  That can work one of two ways for me, too: either I kick it into gear and write the whole thing in one sitting or freeze.  I definitely need to get a thought out there, I have too many notebooks lying around, I seem to keep half a dozen journals going at once.

Nick--Fleming, sometimes it can take that long to see it

Hi May B..
How are you doing today?...i had the pleasure to review Eminem's song, as you know...I like it when he goes deep, the only thing that bothers me is that he seems to be unhappy, really unhappy...hopefully a break will solve his problem...

I'd say it depends on how fresh it can stay in your mind. I've known it to happen that this can take up to twenty years... Success with your writing, though!

immediately....strike while the iron is hot as they say.

ASAP,

I like when I'm writing and the words are flowing so that  it's almost like going at a steady canter.....and no, I can't remember ever being on a horse.

I don't know... sometimes I get so hungry that I just want to go eat Chinese food and I can't write a sentence if I tripped over it.

I found very insightful your article. and I will also want to seize this occasion to express my deep and sincere appreciation for welcoming me back in to the fold.

MayB...get it done before it slips away. That's what I say.
Do you ever find yourself carrying scraps of paper with you so that you can write down a thought before you forget it?  I've got notebooks and scraps of paper all over the place.  Now, if I could just find the time and discipline it takes to turn those rampant thoughts into something of value!  Good luck!

Jojostar, even I was quite impressed with this one which is a dangerous way to feel.

Dave Cryer, thanks. I always try in one sitting to write to the point where it's all down but just needs a very good tweaking - it might not works so well for 4000 words

I love your last sentence, MayB.  The answer is - immediately.

posted by johnmacnab on November 8, 2005 at 5:55 AM | link to this | reply

Get it done not necessarily quickly, but without delay or undue pause, get it finished. Then, when it's finished, if you've got time left, leave it and go back to it later. Tis true that work will expand to fill the time available, so make less time available in the first place if you can. Stephen King's On Writing, amongst others, propounds the method of writing it to its end before any taking of breath. I think it's a good one.

I'm Impressed. You got your story together quickly!! If have an idea in mind I have to get it on paper or computer immediately or it will definitely lose it's luster.
