i do..
blog at work.. but only during lunch time and after office hours. once in a while i'll log in to check the comments and reply but blogging is normally during lunch.yes, it is not really a good thing to do but i feel, isn't it better to blog rather than visit sites that are not as great as this one? hahah..

It's wrong unless you have break times in your contract
I may be old fashioned, but I believe in "an honest day's work for an honest day's wages."

Context
I write online all day.
I have the kids working around me we are creating art and when appropriate I Blog (In lots of places - post their work to my website, just do lots of things with internet and the computers) but really it is as much of my job as any thing else is.
As you would see from my Blog I posted on the weekend from the Fete - that is work I do out of hours...and so I have lots of spare hours chalked up.
During a teachers day (contract) there are times when I am not officially employed here but still on the premises and I can Blog in the down time or lunch time.
Basically Blogging here and elsewhere is part of my working day.
I feel it keeps me motivated to keep working.
With After School Art I Blog on another site and the kids parents Blog back to me.
Frankly I love Blogging,
Jo

As long as their work is completed, I don't see any reson not to let a employee blog a little and remain happy.

A teacher of mine once said that your employer pays you to work.
If you take the time to do something personal, that's stealing. I know if I blogged at work, I'd get fired.

Quirky, I blog at work
but within moderation. I put in time before work hours working. When I need a break, I stop and blog for a while. I'm a firm believer that small breaks should be taken to keep work interesting. Now if you're blogging all day while on the job...

I'd think a bit of blogging on the job isn't too bad, depending on your job/employer. Recently, a number of employees were suspended from their jobs for misusuing the computer system, or something--they were going to pornography sites and doing all sorts of personal stuff. I used to write in my journal all the time when at work--didn't have a blog then. I guess it all comes down to whether or not this stuff is coming between you and doing your job acceptably.

Quirky
There's a lot of down time on my job. Where I used to work, we had internet access. Some of the medics would stay on line for 3-4 hours. Some longer. It was what we looked at that was subject to reprimand. I'm sure no one would have said anything about blogging to me, if I had been there then.

I'm a position where I can blog from work and the boss don't care so
long as I'm giving full attention to my immediate responsibilities. There's nothing wrong with blogging at work so long as you get your "real work" done! If I didn't have Blogit to fill my times of boredom, I'm afraid I might resort to criminal activity so in my case...thank goodness for this place.

I do it
and it keeps me sane. I am dare I say it pretty underemployed, and bored and lonely, and I fetch guests coffee. All this with an MA (it's a step up from "do you want fries wid dat?").
If I didn't blog I would be even more miserable than I AM!
I am an ingrate.

Quirks... as long as the work is getting done by deadlines... and it's alot
of work... then they don't care how we manage our own time. Honestly, I think they'd rather us on the internet than outside smoking or taking a walk. This way, they can still find us when they need us. Good managers don't babysit their employees. They know what's getting done and what's not. I could never work for a place that wanted a log of every second of my day. We have people here that may take three hours to do the same thing it would take me only one to do. Should we be punished for being efficient?

interesting... I happened to post this morning about the hazards of
blogging from work. It's not always easy.
My answer to your post.... I think it depends on the job and on the worker. But no matter what, legally, employees are entitled to more than one 15 minute break in an eight hour day. It's your choice how to use that time. I personally work 12 hour days and we work through lunch. Blogit is my break and doesn't hinder my job performance, in fact, I'm sort of a stellar employee around here. Kind of makes me want to throw up to say that.

Quirky, work is the curse of the boondogglers. Boondoggling is a job in itself and takes a lot of skill. It is not the same as dogbundling.

Ariala,
thanks for voicing your opinion and sharing your perspective. I've been self employed for so long (13 years), and not part of the "job" culture. And when I
was employed by others, I never had a job where I had hours with nothing to do, so I can't say what I'd feel comfortable doing if I were in that situation.

Quirky, I work PT and get all my work done and then there's nothing to do.
I dare them to say something to me...If they don't keep me busy enough, then it's their fault, not mine. I even create new projects, give them new ideas, but sometimes you just have lots of extra time...if they choose to reevaluate cool...if not, cool...do you think a person should just sit at their desk and do nothing with their free time on the job? If I was an employer and had an employee like me (who does great work, gets things done in time and goes the extra mile) I couldn't care less what they do at their desk...Maybe I'm wrong, but that's just what I think of this whole thing.
