What a wonderful post. I think it reminds us that everyone has his or her own "triggers" that we need to be more understanding of.

Ichi,
I guess it's hard for someone who's never "been there" to understand repressed memories or why some things trigger rage or tears. Even so, if they don't understand, like your boyfriend, they can at least have a little empathy and keep quiet. It's enough that you feel it.

Lady...
I completely agree with everything you just said. My boyfriend didn't understand when I wanted to talk to him about a memory I had a few weeks ago about an incident that had happened 13 years to that date. He said "bloody hell darlin, you don't need to talk about it". But that's exactly what I DID need. Some people need to talk, others simply need to be held. I needed both that night, and I got neither. :(

Cosy girl...
...another familiar subject!

I think we should all learn to be a bit more compassionate and learn to step outside of ourselves and let go of assumptions. Memories can not only be dear, sweet recollections. They can also break us. I UNDERSTAND!

I love my roses....thank you! :) I know he couldn't help but be oblivious to my pain...most people don't understand that an "old" wound can still be vividly "painful" today...Love Cosy

Some people just have no clue
If we're lucky, we can surround ourselves with people who will take the time to understand. There will always be those self-absorbed stragglers though.

Memories are strange beasts, and can lie dormant for so long only to be triggered in an instant. Perhaps he wasn't so much insensitive as that he was fearful, and/or he didn't know how to react or what to say. Not to generalize, but I do think it can be hard for some men to be empathetic, esp. as it relates to this subject.
