WILEY
I was thinking about you yesterday and wondering how you were doing.  It dawned on me that I hadn't read any of your blogs for ages and ages.  I thought you had moved south?  Or am I really behind the times?

Thank you strat, for making one of my lines your line of the week.  I will now try to get my big head through the kitchen door.

This is a great post!
Line of the week: "More wasted sarcasm, I sighed as I looked at the new radiant St. Ell.

The shining bright Dove/Pigeon expressed my feelings exactly when it crapped on the bird table. It was going to be one of those days!"

Thank you Blanche for proving my point.  Ell can't help the 'No' answer.  One of these days I am going to ask her if she wants a million dollars and when she says No, I'm going to shrug and spend it by myself - what an imagination.  Remember it wasn't a Dove, Blanche: it was a pigeon, and she made it into a Dove just because it was her birthday - tasted quite nice roasted, though, no matter what she called it.

JohnMcNab,

The "no" gene isn't just in the female chromosome, I could give dozens of examples of "If I say it's black, you say it's white".  The frustration.  Although, to be honest, two of the worst miscreants in my life were female, so I have to give you that one.

But to boo her dove on her birthday, John, you are a cruel, cruel man.

I'll bet they did, malcolm.  Where I came from, they called the racing pigeons 'doos.'

Jacenta
Your idea of a dove is correct, jacenta.  A pigeon is a large greedy bird.  A Dove is a small, gentle bird which wouldn't hurt a fly.  The pigeon was pure white - which I had never seen before, and Ell decided that as it was pure white and it was her birthday, she would call it a Dove.

Good post
I remember telling  my teacher about 'racing doves' when I was little. My friends 'took the pigeon' for years after that.

johnncnab...

Wish I could have seen the striking white dove.  I honestly did not know that a dove was a pigeon.  My cognitative idea of a dove was pure and gentle.

You would not believe what she has had to endure, ginnie.  'Endure' is the wrong word.....'overcome' is a better one.

..that's sad..geesh, poor Ell.    Thank heavens she has you!  (And I mean that without a chuckle or a snicker Mac!)

MayB
We were just talking about how sacred pigeons were where we grew up in the coal mining villages of Scotland - they were racing pigeons and they, and the greyhounds, were treated better then the women.  I'd forgotten about the hordes of seagulls hovering above a fish supper, MayB.

jacenta
'She doth outshine the torches of the night?'  The only good thing about these pigeons, jacenta, (apart from the white one) is that they make an ideal meal for a hungry hawk.

babe_rocks
We don't have many Bluejays at the moment, babe_rocks, and I haven't seen many red squirrels since I came to Canada.  The White Dove was spectacular.  Thanks for popping in.

ginnie
You are a clever girls, aren't you, ginnieb?  When I write things like 'couple of days,' I am being deliberately vague, but this time I wasn't vague enough.  December the 8th it is and I am NOT going to tell Ell that it is the feast of the Immaculate Conception, or she'll start trying her angel's wings.  Oddly enough, Ell never did know her Mother as she died when Ell was 3.   She was brought up by the original evil, cow of a Stepmother - who would certainly not be a dove, and in fact would be more likely to be a carrion crow.

Thank you kind sir.  I appreciate your kind comments, Bud-Oracle.   As for blogging for clicks, if you have a look at the vast amount of money I haven't made in the 28 months I've been here, you know I don't care about clicks.

Ah, you have started a lifetime vocation, drew_bw.  Good luck, and if you think you ever do understand women, don't shout it from the rooftops until a few days later, by which time you will have realised you don't - and never will.

I think I'd have to see it to know what I think. I'm with Ell on the pigeons.

A White one reminds of the pesky seagulls which plaque outdoor eating of fish and chips

BrightIrish
Thanks BrightIrish.  We don't have any trouble with woodpeckers, but the pigeons are a pain in the ass.  I'm beginning to think that the pigeon crap should act as a great fertiliser for next year.

johnmcnab...

I enjoyed reading about Ell and the birds.  You do a nice job writing.  Tell Ell I said Happy Birthday.  I love feeding the birds too, but the bluejays seem to be so aggressive they chace away the little birds.  Somehow they have broken the plastic window in our bird feeder.  Hope you are both doing fine! PS.  I always think of  Romeo and Juliet when I hear about a Morning Dove.  Do you remember the lines about the Dove?

Bluejays are kinda mean, too. But nothing compared to the red squirrels. What a privilege to see a white dove!

Your virginal dove....
...I mean Ell....and my daughter, and my brother, share the same b'day. To Catholics (of which I was one) Dec 8th is the feast of the immaculate conception. My brother always had the day off school on the 8th. So..it was really Ell's mother who was the virginal dove! And now I have to trudge through snow on our deck to refill our birdfeeders...I'd forgotten about the poor starving birds until I read this!

I like your writings john.................................................
Sometimes I get the distinct feeling that many writers on here (I wonder whether I'm the foolish one) don't care for much more than the clicks. They seem unconcerned with the feeling that a reader left with when he has been cheated into a quick click by a stimulating title and  a few irrelevent lines. The that lure me to read the entire page with a goog effort everytime like you, I truly appreciate your efforts. You sir, are bound to get better at your craft everytime you write. The pleasure and effort in your work is reflected in the joy of emotions, provoked thoughts and memories that have been stirred in my soul. Thanks.

Hummingbird Hi.. That was sooooooooooo funny!  I also feed all the birds and my problem is with this HUGE woodpecker, it is a bully! This bird will fly down right in the middle of all the little birds while they are just happily eating away and they are intimidated and leave until its had its fill of food and nuts. It was gone all spring and summer and returned a few weeks ago ( the same huge one). Thanks, for sharing your story.. As alway,I really enjoyed the read!
