Stepping out of the rut involves courage and fear.  If you make money, it is a bonus.

Doing what you love involves sacrifices.

MayB, its too bad that freelance writers can't use the infomercial approach to sell their articles--you know, the Ron Popiel spiel:  "It slices!  It dices!"....   "You'd probably expect to pay......" ...."But wait, there's more...." ...."You get not only......".  etc.

You're right about the luck part.  You need a little luck, lots of patience, some talent and a little more luck!!  And it helps to love or at least like what you are doing...otherwise what's the point?!

You'll never regret
exploring something you feel you should spend your life doing. You will have three-dimensional mindmaps which will show what you've achieved; others will have two-dimensional bank statements.

Majroj, it's as if the love of something is questioned if it's lucrative

BlancheDubois, I agree the worst regret would be not to give your dream your best shot

Tiel, I think that what you say about writers is true. I do know that at the beginning the group I interviewed kept at it because they believed in what they were doing and so they toured and did everything themselves. They had to take their work to the audiences and build up the acceptance. That aspect applies to writing too. You need a little luck too although you have to ensure you're conducive to good luck

They say, "All God's children got troubles." I forget, sometimes, that
mine are very slight compared to most others.  I've been breaking into piggy banks, but at least I HAVE a piggy bank.

Why is it that we always look at things as "for love OR money"?

Nuff said. Rhetoric only.

Sometimes it is just about being in the right place at the right time...
or about knowing the right person at the right time.... Who knows? Maybe you made an impact on one of those millionaires...

Mayb,
At the end of your life, would you want to look back and say, "If only I'd explored my writing, now I'll never know".  I think that's a measure I use.  It's certainly what I say to myself whenever I land in an airplane, "write more".

You have the courage to risk and to go with your talent. And your attitude is certainly good. Funny, tho, how in this world certain talents are not recognized readily. Writers being high on that list. Hard as they may have and are still working, I'll bet the people you interviewed (whoever they were) have a talent the world more readily acknowleges and, yes, pays. BTW
