prevalent attitude, that grammar ignoring bit
so used to email they are, and lingua shortcuts, they don't realize their friend-think won't translate to the world of professional standards. Plus, which, they think those who expect standard usage are fuddies and just plain wrong -- it's part of the attitude that jobs should not interfere with the social life. :)

Its difficult when you try to help people and they just don't get it right! It sometimes seems as if the help you've extended has been dismissed. As for the spelling and grammar - I've noticed that schools just don't put that much emphasis on those two subjects any more and, as a result, kids tend not to pay attention to them either. Sad, isnt it?

It's hard to belive people actually do that. When I worked in administration, I was shocked at the number of resumes my boss recieved that were full of errors just like the ones you're describing.

Some People Cannot Be Helped
When he ignored your first clue, unfortunately that was the indicator of his type personality.  People of that inclination do not take kindly to criticism and often like people to help them as opposed to seeking job based on merit.  Let him sink or swim on his own and be careful of who you send to people who trust you.

Mayb,
People sabotage themselves in strange ways. Perhaps, underneath the arrogance, he still dooesn't feel worthy.  In that case, it's a psychological block, even the best and the brightest fall into these things. It's sad.  You've done what you can do.  The rest is up to him.

Tiel, he might do but perhaps not at that level
Then again he might sort these issues out and surprise us all. I hope so because he is gifted in many ways.
There is unfortunately an arrogance  which I noticed when teaching that grammar and spelling are not important. I always warned them that it would affect their grades. I mean if writing is a fundamental part of a job those things are crucial.

MayB

This young man will never be able to hold a job in PR, even if you do check over his application and resume and letter and he gets hired.  If he GOT the job, he could NOT FOLLOW THRU.  What he needs is a crash course in spelling and grammar.  Any way?  He needs to be made to see the REALITY of his weakness.  Any way?

So sorry to say it but, "You can lead a horse..."  Now I feel dirty.

Regardless, everyone has their own path, and making their own mistakes is a legacy everyone has to live up to.  I hope this person also realizes how much of a friend they have in you.

Be fine,
