Welcome, Lost Hillbilly and Mountain Climber 56!

Good point, Hillbilly! Others did show respect for Mrs. King, but President Bush did so far more consistently and completely than did his detractors.

To answer Jane's question, he is 81. I didn't realize he was that old.

Captain, bingo. All that these people consider approproate is hatred and disrespect for the President. Everything else, including funerals, is to be exploited for that end. And you're right, voters are getting fed up with it. Republicans should run sound byte after sound byte of this extremist garbage in their campaigns this year and in 2008. And wonderful replies to Bud and the others. Very well said.

Bud, I've heard it said that, while she may well have agreed with some or all of the criticism, her funeral was hardly the appropriate place to indulge in them - especially so, I would add, in light of the Reverend Dr. King's world-class tact and civility. The point is, a funeral is no place for propoganda of any sort.

Professor, you're right, the President could not have known what was likely to happen, given the history of his critics' behavior. The issue is not his attendance, it was the conduct of those who chose to exploit a funeral to criticize him. Fact is, they would have done so had he been there or not.

One more thing

Let it be publicly stated here, published and copyrighted for all time; Senator Ted Kennedy is welcome to come to my funeral and offer an appropriate eulogy.  All of you are also welcome to come, by the way  Even Professor Peabody.  However, if any of you heckle the esteemed Senator in any way, or turn my final service into a time of ridiculing a man who has endured so much, from the tragic passing of his brother’s to the inconvenient location of  lakes while he drives intoxicated with young lady friends, if any of you dare to take my funeral, of which you are all invited, as a time for revenge and scorn, I will haunt you and your offspring from that night until the end of time.  ©

Hard Right Propaganda?

Neither I, nor Writeroflight have promoted for hard right propaganda, and I’m surprised you think such a thing.  The whole point of his piece was how there is an appropriate time for politics, and a funeral service for one of the great leaders of the last fifty years is not that time.  Regardless of President Bush’s true motives (of which you have absolutely no idea) he came to show his public respect not only to Coretta Scott King, but also for the movement that she continued after her husband was murdered.  What the “lady,” as you so “respectfully” referred to Mrs. King, would or would not have said in response to such a gesture by the President is also something for which you have absolutely no idea.

Tell me Bud-Oricle, how is holding the Democratic party responsible for disrespecting the dead and soiling a memorial service with slander and hatred, pushing extreme right propaganda?  *Shrugs* But if you want to claim that things like proper decorum in appropriate assemblies, respect for both the dead and our national leaders, and gratitude for sincere condolences is to advocate for only the “hard right propaganda”…then I suppose I’m guilty.

President Bush's attendance

Oh, come on. President Bush knew what he was in for; a little trip to the woodshed by people who didn't vote for him last time, and wouldn't vote for him next time.

But he had to make an appearance, or look like he was "snubbing" MLK's widow. It was an insufferable bind.

And isn't that just as cynical, manipulative and "political" as anything said at the funeral?

These are things the Lady would have said herself
You people are against anything that doesn't parrot the hard propaganda, and very unchristian

Another red-letter memorial service
What was most insulting to me was the fact that President Bush was there, sitting behind all of this hypocrisy and double-speak while the audience thunderously applaued his humiliation. It reminded me of another memorial service in which the Democratic party could not resist slandering, and demeaning the Republican representatives who made an effort to attend. In the latter, the result opened the door for Senator Colman to take Wellstone’s chair as Minnesotans became disillusioned with the games that were being played. I doubt this memorial service will have a similar effect in November, but give the Democrats time. Besides a handful of them, they can’t help but allow their blind rage and hatred of Bush to cloud their judgment.

How old is he now, writer?

Perhaps, if dementia is beginning to set in, he should have someone proof his speeches before giving them . . . .

Great post!

I agree wholeheartedly!

I have always admired President Carter as a person and enjoyed reading his new book. I was very disappointed in him, but not some of the others. It is hard for them to surprise me.

I had a family member that teaches at Tulane and he has had a rough time.

It seems as if everyone is anti-Bush, blaming him for everything everywhere, when fair minds would have to say he outclassed the field. That was a funeral! A place to show respect and stick to the subject matter at hand!

That's all! I'm putting my soapbox up! LOL!
