Famous words from President Reagan:

Jane's comment brought this to mind: "The most terrifying words in the English language are, 'I'm from the Government, and I'm here to help!'"

Let's hear it for personal reponsibility!

Thanks for the comments and encouragement. I hope anyone who reads this will also be encouraged to admit to responsibility and then take action to make the situation right.

FW, we were both to blame. Debt is indeed bondage. It does indeed sap the lfie out of us . . . as well as time we could also be using for blogging!

Writer, thanks for your honest assessment of the situation!
Most of us have brought our difficulties on ourselves.  To expect the gov to fix everything is ridiculous at best and definitely a concept fraught with trouble.  When YOU are able to pull yourselves out of debt, think of how empowered you will feel by doing so.  Hard work and perseverence . . . YOU CAN DO IT!

Yes, you're absolutely right...
but that doesn't mean that Bush isn't an idiot...or just plain sneaky and bought.

Sounds like it's all your wife's fault to me!
Seriously, I admire anymoe whyo takes responsibility for their financial situation. I hope you are able to pull yourself out. Being in debt is a form of bondage that saps the very life out of one's existence.

Personal Responsibility

My wife and I got out of debt about 3 years ago, and I swore we would never do it again.  Then, like you, we bought a house and fell into the same trap.  We’ll pull out of it eventually but the bitter lesson is ours to swallow and learn from.

There is a great line from the movie “Shenandoah” with Jimmy Stewart in which he plays a Virginia farmer trying to stay out of the Civil War.  A Confederate officer rides up to him and asks for his sons to join the army.  His reason is that the “State” needs all of our sons.

To which Stewart’s character replies, “I never asked anything from the State, and I never expected anything from the State.  I do my own living and thank no man for the right.  When my sons were little, I don’t recall anyone from the State coming around with a spare tit.”

Kinda a crude line, but I think our society has lost the concept of personal responsibility.  You answer for your life and your actions, and sometimes bad things just happen and it’s not anyone’s fault.  More often though…bad things happen because it’s your fault.  The State had little to do with it.

writer,

Sounds like the wife and I. We incurred massive debt during my mother-in-laws long illness. She couldn't work and her Social Security payments were not enough. After her death we had to take custody of brother-in-laws daughter. The legal bills were astounding. We didn't have the money. So we put it all on credit cards. Long story made short. We got into financial trouble. We did what we had to do though. We are doing better now. I blame no one for the mess we are in except ourselves.
