I think I've still got one of those things.
I'm not sure I know how it works...

Nanaroo,
My 95 year old aunt still uses a percolator, and her coffee is the best ever! I'm with you - I love that sound ...

Yup...Last Year We Had...
three hurricanes.
Wilma really ravaged this area last year...no electricity for 10 days. Fortunately, Wilma was late in the season and brought down some very cool Canadian air. No need for electricity to run the air conditioner. Still, going out every day just to get ice and drinking water kinda sucked.

I Have Two Percolators...
One is electric for every day use because it brews wonderfully rich coffee in about 12 minutes!
The other is an aluminum stove top model that I use on the side burner of my gas grill during the electricity outages we typically suffer through after hurricanes. Freshly brewed coffee in the mornings just make those outages that much easier to endure.
Both make terrific coffee! As a matter of fact, I haven't had coffee from a drip maker in years.

One of my fav poems that I have written....poetjpb
THE STAINLESS STEEL MAN
The coffee’s dripping, gurgling
in my kitchen this morning.
I pour and the black liquid whirlpools
against the side of my favorite mug.
Not mega, super-size,
not grande, just holds sixteen ounces.
Smooth, simple, steel and black.
Secure handle.
Reminds of daddy’s lunch box.
Maybe it’s the stainless steel.
I hear the click of his lunch pail
latching shut at 4 a.m. Sneaking out of bed,
I set the table for daddy’s breakfast
just to have him to myself. I'm the middle
child, lost in the sea of eight children.
Maybe it’s the simplicity of the mug,
straightforward,
masculine, no fluff like daddy.
"Men shouldn't wear deodorant,
they should smell like a man,” he boasted.
He smelled of fresh white soap and
grease from the shop, an earthy fragrance.
I close my eyes whenever I enter a place
where men and machines mix,
whir and stir memories of him.

Nan--- That's you? Really? From my childhood, what I remember are
the smells of coffee and bacon, as I snuggled under the covers on cold, winter mornings.

I looked up sales of those things and they're still selling well. I think if you use mild coffee in it, it turns out better because the water gets pumped through the coffee many times.
