I meant to write you back on your bike post.....the book I recommended is a philosophy book and really gets into a lot of incredible things using a cross-country bike trip a man takes his son on....and so many of the observations fit flying, too.  You are my hero, gal.  I'm going to get that new classification of license (a sportsman or something) since I can't get the regular pilot's license having had heart surgery....it's goal I've never given up on.......my dad used to let me fly when he took me up....until he had to quit because of his own surgery....there's just nothing like it.........

Bud
thanks for telling me about the format problem- I've seen that in other blogs but don't see it in mine.  Do you see it every time?  I think I saw that in yours early on- remember?  What did you do to correct it?

thanks, I knew you would like this story!

Oh and Nanaroo, whats with the wide format in your blog?
It takes annoying scrolling back and forth to read it. Please tell me why you and Cent do this. I can't easily read this format.

Great tale and a nifty wing. This just gave me an idea for a post in

everything else. You know that in all my flying on hang gliders and later when I owned my own powered ultralight aircraft I only ever got a three hour ground school for hang gliders.

When I add up all the broken parts and some dozen propellers, it would have been way cheaper to take the lessons. By now you understand that I'm pretty stuborne and not too smart at times.

One thing about flying hang gliders for long distances to wherever  the winds take you, sometimes over a sea of trees from horizon to horizon with only a single thread of a road and the odd gravel pit, is that you've never seen the landing patch before and there are no go arounds.

Often the winds are wrong and very gusty, and the ground is uneven sloping the wrong way.

The really great thrill comes when you land on the side of a mountain top. With a tail wind, usually in rough unstable air, you must fly straight at the mountain and land going uphill.

If you've watched Air America you'll get some nice footage in a powered mountain landing.

Hi Ariala
you know, flying was the scariest thing I've ever done.  Shortly after this incident, I was rear-ended in my car and the resulting neck problems kept me from flying for a year- I haven't flown since.  I do miss it but the motorcycling is a lot more fun for me, it's something that hubby and I can do together, it's a LOT less expensive and I think it's much safer...

Nanaroo, neat...you do all kinds of things, don't you? LOL

...wow..what a story!
...yes, a Zen thing!... reminds me of a bike ride years ago in the mountains on Hwy 38, came out of corner, and there a was fat boulder, about 8-10", right in my line as I straightened up, hit it square on! ..and airborne!... and the Zen of it... something way down deep in the gut.... knows, and just takes over, ',mind get outa the way, we're doin this,' ..stand lightly on the pegs, bend with it as she touches down, calmly hold it straight...  and on down the road... and then the mind catches up and  has to pull over and have a smoke...   Great plane story, thanks, M

it's said that if you get shook up while flying a plane, your brain turns to mush and that can happen...  that's why practice is so important!

I'd like to be a pilot but that panic would be pretty scary.

Nanaroo,

I gotta give it to you girl!  I am a white knuckle flyer and would never have the guts to do that.  note:  will email you later.

Nope, not me! I'll fly IN a plane but I will not FLY a plane
I'd rather be the nervous passenger, one hand on a bottle of strong liquor and the other holding the trusty rip-cord!
