Thanks for commenting!

Not many answers along the lines of what I was looking for, but always appreciated anyway.

Damon , let's talk spin. Read Xenox's comment below this one for an example. The fact is, most anything I write is going to be spin to you, and most anything you write is going to be spin to me. But that helps keep this whole exercise in free speech so entertaining and stimulating.

Sarooster and Corbin, the faithful opposition says the same thing about Pace  Using Damon's mention of spin, I think it was telling that Murtha refused to acknowledge the successes. (Incidentally, General Pace didn't even mention the benefits to the country's infrastructure and economy, at least not in this quote.)

Scoop, that is indeed how I would have expected him to answer. But concerning your poll of the troops - how would you know the poll results were accurate, given the statement about how they answer questions? And the same old suspicions about polls in general pop up as well.

xenox - true, victory doesn't equate to correctness. But your analogy of Jesus fails completely - you forgot the Resurrection. And doesn't your statement about using the assessment of someone who has a stake in one's perspective apply to your opinion as well? Note that I cited both General Pace and Congressman Murtha. Thanks for the link to that great bastion of journalistic fairness and open-minded presentation of all sides of the debate. I'm sure Mother Jones gave extensive coverage to the Iraq documents. I searched their site for [Iraq documents] and found nothing even hinting at this subject in the first 50 hits. Nice spin, too.

regarding the weekly standard blurb
the information comes from government sources
the government has been shown to have misinformed from the beginning.
and been misinformed
certain spuriouis anti-Saddam figures have fed this information to the government

I wouild think this source is much more accurate than your WEEKLY STANDARD, wouldn't you?

Xeno-X,
Kurds are trying to annex (with America's weaponry and aide) the oil rich North Iraq! They are happy with the present arrangement of divide to conquer!

victory doesn't make correctness
correct people have lost throughout history, just as liberals have sometimes recently.
remember Jesus was crucified -- did that make him wrong?  -- he lost big.
but the general's statements on the war don't take into accouint

on the political front:

1.  The Kurds prefer not to be paret of Iraq -- have formed virtually their own nation in the north.
2.  Sunnis and Shiites are battling heartily and there could very well be a civil war break out.  These two groups have been at each others throats for decades, particularly with the Iran-Iraq  war pitting sunnis against shiites.

on the military front, "allied" forces hardly control a third of the countryside, let alone Baghdad where bombings occur daily -- and the green  zone is virtually the only safe zone.

as usual conservatives use the assessment of someone who has a stake in painting a rosy picture of the situation.

facts and truth don't matter much to you do they?

Anymore I see people looking at this as a glass half full or half empty
And be honest how do you think Pace is going to answer the question? It is just like when they interview troops on duty with a camera and mike in their face they answer so they won't get in trouble. A recent poll of troops showed how they really feel and it is split all over.

writer,
You have to remember that Murtha is a Democrat, and while being fairly conservative most of the time, he is very liberal when it comes to the war. To him his opinion is fact!

Why do I keep thinking of a remora fish?????

Oh, well......

Murtha is full of crap.   'nough said.

If You Can...
...cope, I suggest you take a look at this blog.

It will give you a clear guide as to why the majority now believe very little of the spin around this mad war.

As for the "successes" in Iraq - very thin indeed.

A constitution depends for its worth on a population that are at least vaguely aligned and together in their wishes and desires. That is definitely not the case in Iraq, where over 500 people were killed in the last week alone.

And yes, elections took place, but the government are trapped by the violence in the Green Zone (which expands it's lines of defence outwards almost every month). What use is that? They have very little influence over events in the country, and very little freedom as to what they do as they're effectively a puppet of the US.
