Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán, pictured above with his wife, was the democratically elected, center-left agrarian reformist President of Guatemala. Overthrown in a CIA-led coup, he was replaced by a military junta that proved to be one of the bloodiest in the region, and led to a thirty-year civil war.
