Thank you, Frankenkitty ...
4 of the 7 members on my list were no longer active ... two of whom are (likely) never ever to return again.

That's a good policy, Anthony ...
besides, being on a lot of people lists is hardly a concrete indicator of your blog's quality.

Penguin, I find such numerical rankings to be both arbitrary and/or capricious.

I always hated Joseph's "blogger awards for excellence" ...
or whatever the Hell he called them.

I have never used a "favorite's list", at all, Blanche.
At least, not that I know of.

I see no (longterm) advantage, PassionFlower, to ever ...
posting one's distribution list.  Though, I do see plenty of disadvantages.

posted by Mademoiselle on April 23, 2006 at 10:14 PM | link to this | reply

Thank you, BlackPearl ...
and, to be honest, I don't think I've ever once visited a blog based on the blogger's presence on another's "people list".

Time for me to be "payed homage to", Burly.

Nothing matters to me, Azur ...
it was really just a hypothetical question, actually.

Sorry about the delayed responses, everyone ...
though, obviously, I wasn't able to be online very much this weekend.

People lists make me feel guilty
because I don't want to miss someone, yet I'm not around often enough to keep them up to date. Good question though. Hope you had a nice weekend

Doesn't matter really, like I,m here for me anyway really. I read others of course, but listings don,t matter.

posted by WileyJohn on April 22, 2006 at 9:17 PM | link to this | reply

I don't know why they're there
but I don't see any reason to say people shouldn't have them, sometimes I use it go get to people blogs, but whatever. I agree with Burly, ranking is terrible.

I think keeping a list of those you like is fine. What I object to is publicly rating them. How arrogant!

posted by Burly on April 22, 2006 at 6:30 AM | link to this | reply

Mademoiselle,
I kept a favorites list for a while, until it got so long that it wrapped into the "more" screen and that point I had to click another link to go find my favorites list, which totally defeated the purpose in my mind of having the list in the first place.  Since I couldn't limit it to just the few on the first page, I scrapped it.

posted by Blanche. on April 21, 2006 at 9:25 PM | link to this | reply

The people on my People List are folks I enjoy reading-
But also people who read me as well. Turn about is fair play! I used to post my distribution list once a month (Many of us did) but people got all up in arms and wanted to start a fight every time they saw one. So not too many of us post them anymore.

posted by Passionflower on April 21, 2006 at 8:50 PM | link to this | reply

Mademoiselle,

Although I don't have a people list of my own, I occasionally click on the names I see on others bloggers' lists, just to find writers that I may not have read before.  It really helps me find the more obscure bloggers that may not pop up as often on the home page, without my having to browse the categories one-by-one.  Sorry, if that sounds a bit lazy.

Anyway, I guess I don't put too much emphasis on who else reads who, because it eventually just boils down to who we like to read, based on our own experiences.  You have a nice short post here, that's spawned a lot of thoughts and comments.  This gift you have for doing that is possibly why you seem to stay on a lot of people's lists.  If I had a list, you'd likely be on it. Good job.  :)

We should let people know what matters directly

I'd say I like people lists since I had been on it...
But then again, I suppose you got rid of it for the same sorts of reasons I did...

Don't worry about it. I rarely give them.

posted by Mademoiselle on April 21, 2006 at 12:28 PM | link to this | reply

Yeah, I doubt it really ever helps anyone, Talion,

During my first tour of duty here, I was on the People lists of two very prominent bloggers, both of whom actually came out and said I was their favorite writer here ... and still I essentially gained "jack squat" (in terms of clicks).

So, I guess the lesson is: people have to find their audience (or not) on their own, regardless of who promotes them.

P.S. Thank you so much for the compliment earlier.  Though I warn you, I do not handle them well.

I don't think they hurt, but they don't necessarily help either. I think only a newcomer could benefit the greatest from one. Once we've been here a while, we discover who we like and who we don't on our own.

Smart cat.
Mine is not nearly so intelligent ... though, he does crap a lot.  (Which is actually going to be the subject of my next post.  Seriously.)

posted by Mademoiselle on April 21, 2006 at 12:06 PM | link to this | reply

I don't check people lists. Rarely am I on them. Although once when I was mad at the world, I wrote all my exes names on a "Hit List" and it helped me feel a lot better! Interestingly enough, a week later when my cat got mad at me for breaking up a fight between her and another cat, she headed straight for my room, and that was the same piece of paper she crapped on!

posted by tigerprincess on April 21, 2006 at 11:56 AM | link to this | reply

I don't even bother looking at other people's lists anymore, vickip ...
frankly, I got tired of not seeing myself.

posted by Mademoiselle on April 21, 2006 at 10:15 AM | link to this | reply

I like The Book of Lists -- I hate grocery lists -- and if there is a
shit list, I'd like not to be on it -- if it's a hit list, please pass it this way, I'd like to add a few names -- as for the list of favorite bloggers on the sidebars, I could care less but, I will read the names listed there if I really like the blogger whose blog I am reading because I respect their opinion.

the worst post ever (that actually received any visits).

At least since that "Loose Ship" guy left.

I was thinking the exact same thing, Sassyass,
It would be nearly impossible (plus look ridiculous) for me to list everyone who comes here quasi-regularly.  (Especially if as many of my friends join as I anticipate eventually doing so.)

posted by Mademoiselle on April 21, 2006 at 9:51 AM | link to this | reply

What was the question again?
O.k., for real, I like lists, but not when they leave people out that you interact with daily. I used to post my list of bloggers that I was reading, until I realized that some people were offended if they weren't on it. Its hard to get to everyone, but I do try.

just not ones involving people.

were no longer here, anyway.  And only one of them is likely ever coming back ... and he already knows I love him.

Also, to answer a couple emails:

I'm referring to the list of names that appears on the right of the screen, under the heading "People".

I thought the post was pretty self-explanatory, actually.

P.S. Oh, and yes, I do have a steady boyfriend.

And no, I wouldn't be interested in that.

I was referring to the "People" list!

P.S. The answer to the riddle is "Nothing".

Mademoiselle,

Let's qualify that, then I'll give you an answer.  If it's a list that I would like to be on and I am in at least the top 5% of the list, then it is a very good thing.  If either of those conditions is not met, then it is a very bad thing, and just plain sucks.

I missed out on your riddle.  I am TCM (Totally Cluelsess Mutha) on that one.

This is totally beside the point, but I never realised before that the
tag-line for The Unbearable Lightness of Being actually contains the city which is the namesake of the author. I'll have to watch it again - all I remember is Prague.
