bandanafish, I try to relate two quotes. One form contemporary culture and
one from classical literature. That way I keep in touch. Selective perception : being fooled :: understanding : reality.
Thanks for the clicks!

what?
Oh, ha, I wasn't referring to Paul Simon thing. I was just commenting on the quote "sense impressions reveal...." exclusively. Didn't even notice what Paul Simon was saying until now. Anyway, I just thought it was very intriguing that you should have this quote here because just couple days ago, I was reading a book called Art of Trial Lawyers and they were saying about appearances and our perception.
Good quote still! Thanks for all these stuffs. I love it.

bandanafish, I think what Paul Simon was saying was that in his youth
he grew past the sensory as understanding phase that he thinks the others are still in. I think he feels isolated and alone because he feels understanding that others don't even think about. He feels glad that he escaped his little town because he felt trapped by people who only perceived sensory input selctively, and that led them to be racist, exclusivist, parochial, culturally clustered together for protection, ignorant and dumb.
Not that he was trying to be better than everybody.

very true.
And what's also quite interesting is when we don't understand something (but trying to), we look harder and harder at its appearance. That'll never work, because as Kant said, understanding is from within. Love Kant. Thanks for the quote!
