I've worked out what to do to fend him off
I comply with all his cornball theories perfectly and then I'll no longer be a challenge

If you need to repel any mentor, give me ten minutes and I'll give you
three solid approaches, at least two legal, and probably non-lethal.

I can tell you I'll never nail
a thirty second pitch. I'm the worst sales person ever.  People don't know how to take me, I'm not good at making people feel comfortable.  You must be a natural. My dad was the best sales guy I ever met.  He doesn't have to try and people like him.  I hope this new opportunity works for you. If nothing else, you've made quite a few positive contacts.  Take care

Azur,

The phrase that the first trainer used triggered a memory of a scene from Barbara Ehrenreich's book "Bait and Switch", where she undergoes career counseling, and encounters all kind of woowoo trainers, recruiters and counselors, who use psychology tests (often with contradictory results).  The 30 second elevator speech was part of her training also.

In any case, I hope you get the mentor you need by being yourself rather than having to fit some preordained script.

I think I have a different mentor - the guy who got me on the scheme. Yes that first guy would irritate me.  I hope he doesn't show an interest in taking me on as a challenge or something

Passionflower, my business is writing,
editing and training in writing and media relations. I prefer journalism and fun writing but I can write commercially. I have yet to write ads.

I think you may be right about him. One trainer really listened but he does mentoring professionally.
I am already listed as a mentor

Benzinha, yes I get to teach even when I'm the student
Next time my partner is coming along so it will be interesting to see how and if the dynamic changes

Sounds like it went well in the end result!

azur, something like this happened when I went for a course on

clay sculpting, to see what might be new and interesting and ended up giving sales clues and marketing tips to my teacher....as she just made things and I pushed things out of my  studio, while hers sat on shelves.

I did want a mentor, but, sometimes you are the one who knows in the room and not the one who doesn't know.

Great to walk down new paths, just to peek around new corners and to check out the new vistas, no?

Azur, you have already made a connection for mentoring.
I am sure the young man is not mentor material as he talks too much about himself.

Apparently you have made a good impression.  You are quick witted and think on your feet.   That is definitely an asset.

What type of business do you have?
Do you write commercial ads? I always wanted to write commercials. I have written a few but nobody buys freelance TV commercials.

Watch. The first trainer will be your mentor!

As for the others....retainers accepted.

Most classes I attend (and professional journals I read) are 90% BS and hype.
