I saw an interview with him and apparently he almost lost his voice (always raspy) to illness and now he sings in a different style. I imagine  your mother is just happy he can still perform

Blanche01, Mick Jagger is incredibly successful at staying on.
What's dignity compared to the fun of pulling in crowds in the tens of thousands? I think he's the last person who should give up. They love the gigs and people still love them. In their case the shows are better than the records. I've seen two shows and would consider seeing another athough I won't make it 25 times ;-).

I knew someone who went to school with Jagger so I have an idea of how he would look if he hadn't lived the life he did.

I think my mom has seen Rod Stewart 20 times!  She loves him!

Passionflower, yes they might as well.
John Denver doesn't have that option any more does he?

I couldn't see myself doing it either

JohnMcNab, I think that often friends and family are very
matter of fact about what we write.  They accept it so why fuss about it

blackpearl, I imagine that there is some fantasy side to it for her
but I don't ask about that and I guess that's why her husband quit going with her

Majroj, yes that seems to be the way it goes. If they are still standing
and enough people want to pay the entrance fee, I say where's the harm?

Azur,
Wow.  Twenty-five times is a lot.  I'm trying to think of who I could stand to see live 25 times.  I'm with Whacky, in that I'll play a CD to death, but I'm sure I couldn't afford the time or money to see someone that many times.  I also love singers like Barry Manilow.  He sings very mellow stuff.  The rockers who are still going do amaze me.  Mick Jagger must be an anomoly of sorts.  How he's still going is beyond me.  I guess some people just don't know how to retire, especially if it's all they've ever done for 40+ years.  Wow.

Peggy Lee played our grad night at Disneyland in 1971.

Face immobile, stumbling monlyrics, and unable to make the second show. There are limits.

I remember the procession was hit records every year (under the old fashioned customary nine-year exclusive contract)and tours to supprt; then, a "best of" albumn; finally, Las Vegas casinos, then lounges. Then LA bars.

Now they play the Indian casino circuit and the oldies bars. Still performing, hopefully entertaining.

I tend to see things as your partner does, but your view, like Ell's, makes a lot of sense.  As for my writing, the only fans I have are on Blogit, as I rarely let anyone else see my work because I assume they will gush politely or criticize too much.  I remember slaving over an article my friend was in and when it was finished, I gave it to him to read.  I suppose I was looking for approbation, but all he did was read it, nod, and go back to watching television.

25 times? Wow that's a lot!

I might play a record (OK CD) that much but go see em? nope.

Azur,

Barring Mick Jagger, who I really should retire, just for pride's sake, I see no reason why a singer should retire just because of age.  Fans love the old favorite, but you're right, there's room for innovation. When M and I saw Lucinda Williams she pleased the whole crowd with her famous songs, and then added a few that hadn't been released, just to tantalize us with more to come, and the fact that we had heard music that hadn't been recorded yet.

The old favorites may pay the bills, but maybe the singer keeps some part of his or her creative spark for new endeavors, some freeform riffing.

I agree...If I were someone like
Barry Manilow or John Denver I would still be singing and making music.
