The Smiths are cool. To me, it's okay to be a cliche, sometimes you have to be one to not be one. Hell, we'll never escape it although all writer's fear mediocrity and hence; cliche. :):)
But I totally know what you mean to give into something so enthusiastic. I've got my tunes, too.
(Really early police are mine. Like "man in a suitcase" or "behind my camel" or even "i burn for you")

Whether it's lyrics or not - the repeated refrains and down-to-earth themes make it excellent poetry.
