Pat_B, I think the starving artist cry has had its day
We can choose that or not. If we do choose it we should not cry about it

I liked this comment, if we sell ourselves too cheaply then the buyer wonders what's wrong

Azur...my husband has said so many times that if The Met started giving
away front row seats to the opera...nobody would go. I agree with you...we must determine our own great worth!

Your goal is not to be a starving artist...
that's only interesting in a movie. A working writer earns every dime, because there's a lot of experience, research and thought behind every paragraph. And speaking from my own healthy self-interest, when you earn good money for your good work, you've opened the possibility for me. Thanks!

Azur, et.al,
You guys are quite inspiring, here. Or maybe it's just some good positive energy flowing around, today. Thanks, because I need all of it. :)
bel_1965, great advice. More kids should hear that from their parents.

well
I wonder if most people want other's to set the value of ____ it's worth if the apraiser said it was, or so and so said it's a great deal. You set the value to low and people will not appreciate it. I say always have it in your mind what's it's worth and then take it up a notch.

it takes a while for us to define ourselves as who we are rather than who we have been or might have been.
I always count on the fact that some people look at us in a way that reflects their own fears.

Frankenkitty, I think stories such as your dad's are very humbling
People can imagine that something would never happen to them but we are all only a couple of unfortunate coincidences from the whole damned deck falling down. In your posts about your father, you always give him dignity and I admire that. Dignity is within.

You're worth more because you have the potential to improve and surprise even yourself.

I think people who want any old thing can pay any old price but people know what they want think about the value of something to them

Sharing our energy and thoughts is a gift and sadly we don't have an endless suppy - or I don't. Some days I have to struggle to find any energy at all even though the thoughts are there

Hello Azur! My dad went through
worth depreciation after the shooting. Unfortunately, the incident depleted his worth. He couldn't get a job at a gas station, so my sister's boyfriend got him that job at the bar. He went to Vice President of Sales and Marketing at a hundred million dollar company, to owning his company, to getting robbed and screwed, to managing a bar and having a car crash through it on his first night, to jail. I guess you could say it's a slippery slope and you never know what twists life will throw at you. Take care and have a terrific weekend

You have your foot on the first step of your very own ladder. Wonderful, and never mind what people think.
Having the courage to be an entrepreneur is the most wonderful thing to do for yourself. It's like buying a house for yourself, bon courage.
I worked for myself most of my working life. One time I was crying the blues about it. A really good friend looked at me and said,
"Stop whining, you chose to do this, now grow up and accept your choice."
I listened to what Claude D said to me, and that was the greatest, I begged and borrowed the funds I needed and never looked back.
Love yourself and what you have chosen to do.

LOL Of Course I Am Right
Ask my husband I am always right! Seriously, you know your worth and only you can set those standards for others.
As I tell my daughter: What you accept tells others what they can do and how they can treat you. I believe this applies in all aspects of life.

Bel is right...
absolutely! If you find your rates are too high, it's so much easier to lower them. But if you have a few people that are willing to pay the rates you want, then I'd say you are definately worth it. Focus more on repeat customers than getting new ones perhaps? If they come back, you definately know that you are worth what you are charging.
Crete has that kind of policy and they are not having as much trouble as my former employer in getting/keeping business. They charge at the upper end of going rates, but they provide good service. So people come back, even if they try some cheaper company, because of the service.

Azur, only you know what you are worth. If you give it away for less, do it only because you are giving it as a priceless gift to one who is worthy of such.

I'm dealing with much of the same now.
Not lowering my standards means that it will take longer to find the right fit, but it will be worth the wait. (I hope.)
