Perhaps what Justi is referring to.......
is the evolutionary process of civilization......which I view as two steps forward and one step back.......in that sense, I think the word is applicable.....

I can see where Nautikos is coming from, looking at evolution
as a strictly biological process. With survival of the fittest and such you would think we'd see some sort of gradual improvements over time.
However, it's humanists who seem to think that man is getting better and better every day, in every way and, well, I sure am not seeing that. To borrow a verse from the Bible, I think it's safe to say that "the heart of man is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked" (not sure if quite accurate, but close enough). So any one of us is capable of despicable deeds, whether we like to admit that or not.

Maybe so, but mankind has never been much without Jesus!

Justi,
sorry for my somewhat dismissive comment earlier. (Among other things, I was being interrupted by an important phone call.) In any case, I know your heart's in the right place, but it is necessary to point out that evolution is a concept that belongs to biology, and can be meaningfully applied only to human biology (over
very long periods of time), but
not human history.

Tall and Skinny
I agree with you wholeheartedly. That is the country doing what the individuals are doing in my post. Anger is only about power. The government there has rendered them powerless. That is a different issue.

Well-Said
I can agree with this, and we need to put it out there again and again. The only thing that gives me pause was living in Guatemala - a human rights nightmare - the last 4 months of 2004. I don't excuse violence in any form, but many people there (and I would suspect in many places around the globe) feel they have no democratic, peaceful ways to affect positive change in their country. They attend a rally and get kidnapped. They start an organization that lobbies the government for democratic change and their office gets looted. They write a letter to the editor - assuming it gets published - and their child disappears. The army in Guatemala burned over 600 villages to the ground in the early 80s. Only 4 cases have been successfully brought to trial, and only for lower level officers.
Again, I don't condone violence. We do need to make sure we don't support repressive governments with our money and weapons. You know, the Saddam Husseins before they gas their own people...
Terrific post, lots of timely points. I think we're going the same direction.

Justi,
sorry to have to disappoint you, but evolution is
not, has never
been, and will not
ever be about
'that we continued to spiral upward to bigger and better modes of living'...
